I lost my back yard RR to Hurricane Andrew in 1992,but it was extra fun for about 7 years before. I'll try to find a pic an add it. OK,found two that show both ends of back yard. Track is a brass so good in weather, but not in hurricane 150mph winds. Backyardpre1992LeeLinesRR.jpg

  2. Stumbled across one in Western North Carolina a few years ago when I was heading to Bristol. Was a steam locomotive that the guy burned coal in to fire it. The tracks were about 9" between and you rode on the tender to fire it and operate the loco.

....and I build WW-II model planes, too.

  5. In 1956 my dad bought me an American Flyer table-top layout from a friend of his. I set it up in my bedroom. When Mom sold the house after dad died, I brought the layout to my present home and upgraded the trackwork with Gargraves stainless track but, other than that, the layout's still the same.

Click on the link for a short YouTubee video I shot a couple of years ago.

Time to get dizzy.....1920-30's Lionel Standard Gauge.

What is really amazing is there almost as many replacement parts for these 1920's and 30's Lionel Standard Gauge trains as there are replacement parts for Model A Ford Cars! Back then things were built to last.

  10. This is the "n scale" Christmas train garden I designed to fit the dinette table in the sailboat that I lived aboard. Built from 3/4" and 1" marine ply cut at a 45 degree angle on a bandsaw. The tin houses came from a light set that I found in a thrift shop.
The boat is long gone, but I still have the train and about half of the dinette table. 1219181635.jpg

It's good to see the Flyer stuff in the cases. My collection is all Gilbert HO. Born and raised in New Haven, walking distance from the Gilbert factory buildings. I still drive by them almost daily.

  14. I didn't get to see it in operation as he had it cleaned out for cold weather. He said that it was a lot of time to get it going or he would for me but time was short so we didn't get to see it. It was definitely one of the most impressive set ups that I have seen, working operating crossing gates and a lot of extras.

There is a community of rail enthusiasts who build there own steam locomotives and rolling stock. They are literally the real thing only scaled down into different scales and gauges. If you were to search Live Steam you will amazed at what is out there.

  17. Finally dug out my old Lionel stuff(still have more to go)and took a few pictures. As far as I have been able to determine this model 400e was built between 1935 and 1939. In addition to the items shown there is a lighted rail station;many feet of track including various switches;the transformer and a whistle transformer. All of this was stored away in an attic inside a couple of large cardboard boxes wrapped in newspapers dated 1947. There was also a bunch of cardboard buildings and even a cardboard train set(supposedly by Lionel made during WWII but no markings to verify). I'll have to photograph those as well. You're sitting on a very valuable Standard Gauge Lionel set. Check that auction sight and you'll see some large numbers for what you have. Take care of them.

You are right, trains and cars seem to go together. I am restoring a 37 Caddilac and also build trains in 1:32 scale and here are a couple of locos that I have built from scratch. E8, a and b. And a T1 steamer. I am also working on some Amtrak superliner cars, have already made the engines. IMG_1618.JPG IMG_1614.JPG

  21. Just took some photos of more train stuff. The pictures aren't all that clear because of the relative darkness of my basement and the poor lighting down there. Add to the fact that the batteries in my camera need re-charging.
Anyway the items pictured were acquired along with all the Lionel stuff. The buildings are all heavy cardboard and not really to any particular scale(maybe O or possibly smaller). There are no manufacturer's marks on them but I assume they were pre-WWII as well.
The really interesting pieces(to me anyway)are what appears to be a smaller version of the Lionel 400e but made from cardboard! Supposedly these were made by Lionel during the second World War because metal was not available. The little figures in various poses are also cardboard with provision to make them stand. Have an appointment to show them to a person well versed in Lionel stuff and he appeared to be quite excited about them. Will find out next week.

I just found this thread today. It's a while since I last logged in. Been an HO model railroader as well as a hot rodder most of my lifetime. If you are into modeling in this scale there is a huge amount of car/truck models in HO (1/87) scale as well as relevant structure models and kits if you are interested in building dioramas. The modern models tend to be more accurate to scale than the 1/64 albeit somewhat less detailed due to smaller 1/87 size.

  23. The 1/87th scale Wiking ,Herpa, and RoCo models are incredibly detailed for their size. Wiking also makes many of them in 1/144th (N) scale as well. Wiking has mostly European models(they are German made)but there are a lot of earlier USA models in their lineup. Their only down side is they are not cheap.
Herpa models are on a par with Wiking as to details(and price)but don't have as much of a selection. RoCo (Austria)makes some incredible military models.
Testor's made some HO scale models awhile back and you can occasionally find them in bigger hobby shops. I think they may still be in production.

Still have al my Lionel stuff from the 1960's and some older stuff from the 1930's. Have that big two lever controller, that somehow fried itself. Now that I think about it that could have been the beginning of my total lack of understanding electricity. No room to set up the track, it was fun at the time. Bob

I have all my Fathers Lionels. He came home from WW2 and bought himself some trains, he passed in 72 and Mom gave them to me. Still put them under the tree every Christmas. If I could figure out how to post pictures I would. :(

I was surprised the 4014 Big Boy didn't get much attention here on the HAMB, unless I missed it?

I chased it from Minneapolis up to Duluth. I enjoyed seeing it more than I thought I would. Don't miss it if it is near you...

I started model railroading in 1947, over the next few years built a modest layout then, turned 16 and changed to cars. Recently did a 1959 Mitsubishi scooter, am finishing up a Hemi powered RPU and presently building a 1/8 scale Locomotive switcher engine. Building just seems to be my passion
