I think it was Elco that sold those gear drive setups for the throttle shafts and the pump squirter....

The manifold was cast for the earlier 394 engine, it would be pre-‘65. It was 1965 when Olds introduced the all new 425 which was eventually enlarged to 455.

Carter, Holley, and Stromberg all made at least one 3-barrel carburetor.

My records show the Carter in 1963, the first of 4 or 5 Holleys in 1964, and the Stromberg in 1937.

All three have been pictured on various threads on these forums.

There were a number of aftermarket modifications for the Holleys. There were no aftermarket modification for the Stromberg, and I am unaware of any for the Carter.

The Carters are quite scarce (I only have two of them ;) ). I have a letter from Carter stating only 15~20 were made. This is slightly incorrect, as when I was researching the Pontiac SD carburetors, I found 24 of them.

The Stromberg was a prototype only, no production. I have the only one produced.

I do not have any idea of the production numbers on the Holleys, but at one time I had more than a dozen, so am positive there were more produced than the Carters. All of these are now gone.

The Carter 3-barrel was originally designed exclusively for NASCAR racing, and as such, the primary and secondary shafts operated via linkage at almost one to one; which made the carburetor virtually worthless on the street. Guessing that the company that made the aftermarket gear drive for the Holley got the idea from the Carter. Carter used linkage, whereas the Holley was retrofitted with gears to achieve the one to one.

We did modify a couple of the Carters to have conventional secondary linkage where the secondary was adjustable when it came in. This was done by removing the secondary linkage from the 3-barrel, and replacing this linkage with the complete secondary linkage from one of the Carter 750 CFM Comp series carbs, part number 4760s. By doing this, the carburetor made a dandy "street sleeper" carb.

    Jon.
