Wish we could build a real hot rod that fast.
Neat little sketch that opens the door to more.

Most of the people I know who cut a clean line the first time actually do warm ups then when you go to draw your hot rod full of the three shapes you just scribbled for 30 seconds you’ve got some fresh muscle memory and it’s much easier. There are lots of tricks :)

    That drawings awesome btw

I’ve been drawing a few with my daughter. I drew a few Ed Roth inspired hot rods. This was the first one.

  17. How'd I do? I use to always sketch out my cars before making any real life changes but I haven't done one in years. No need to with photo shop and smart phone cameras 56safariart.jpg

I was taught as an artist you never stop learning.
    So I appreciate the lesson.
I'm reminded of the Trosley "How To Draw's" from back in the days of the original CarToons magazine.
You should do a whole series of these man.
Heres my try at the Jive-Bomber Rod.

  21. I used to draw them pretty much the same as Jive-Bombers example. Only difference is i allways had a swoopy antenna with a foxtail on the end .

I have 0 artistic ability, but my father was a talented cartoonist. He graduated from a small high school in New York during late WW2, so was asked to draw some cartoons for the class yearbook. One of the girls in his class showed them to her uncle, he called Dad and tried to hire him. The uncle was Walt Disney. It was WW2, Dads went into the service as soon as he graduated.

Great tutorial, Jay. I will show the youngest grandson and see if he will do some and I will post the results. I used to watch Jon Gnagy on Sat. Mornings as a kid and had one of his learn to draw kits. Add this to an uncle who worked at International Paper and you have a youngster that burned through a lot of paper!

I know that this is a little beyond what you're teaching (maybe the next step), but this was done at Friendly's about 15 yrs ago. They hand out crayons to IMG_1942.jpg keep the kids occupied, but what about Grandpa? This was the result.

  25. I can't even draw a crooked line.

We all develop different talents and there are those who are born with the gift and some strive their entire life and can never really master the thing they want the most, I fail miserably at art but found my creative outlet working with metal and building cars. HRP

Reminds me of being in the 8th grade when I lived on Bainbridge Island Wa and one of my buddies would say "draw a ______ ________ and pass it to me. I'd draw the basic car and we would pass the drawing from car freak to car freak around the class room and each guy would add his touch.

Alright @D-Russ here’s mine. I draw cars almost every day so I figured to keep in the spirit of the original post I’d try to do the follow along and keep to the format so to speak. 85CB34C0-C89E-4E84-9E7A-43D8F4D0C23C.jpeg I think it came out cool, it’s not at all process wise how I would draw one normally but it does give you a hotrod that feels like the old cartoons and has some implied energy. I had fun :)
