I want to use a c4 because of it's small size but I'm lost as for the right converter. I have to use the 50z flex plate that came with the 302 but the bell housing of the c4 is to deep( 7") to let the converter engage with the pump. Is there a ford bell that is around 6" from engine to trans.? Any ideas are welcome.

I did this several yrs ago. I think it's a special flex plate to use. I used a std c 4 bell.

  3. There is a 'conversion' flexplate to allow a 50 oz motor to be hooked to a C4, that's what you need. Summit, Jegs, others carry them...

Just went through this myself. I ordered the special TCI small diameter C4 flex plate with 50 oz imbalance to hook the 2 together. Let’s you put a C4 behind a roller 5.0. Also decided to go with a Hughes Street Rod converter. Just a step more stall than stock. Don’t have the numbers with me now but can get them this evening if you want them.

might help to know exactly what torque converter you have, and what bellhousing you have. Pictures? part numbers? descriptions?

there are [2] c4's... pre 72ish had [1] set of pump/bellhousing bolts, 157 flexplate teeth... the later has [2] sets and is bigger, 164 flexplate teeth... different splines on the input shaft...
bigger one has the starter mounting bolt swung outward for the bigger flex p...

There was a C-5 made in the early 80s that looks like a C-4 but had a lock up converter that could have a deeper bellhousing.

Yup, forgot that as mine are big bell and 164 tooth (same as AOD). Early case-fill and input complicates it.

  11. There's been a few reports of issues using the AOD flexplate; it doesn't engage the convertor fully into the trans as there's supposedly about 1/4" difference in convertor location. I know 31Vicky recently had issues trying to go the other way (AOD to a 351) and the C4 flexplate wouldn't work.

There's a reason the conversion flexplates are offered...

Thanks a ton, I just went to Jegs and I think a TCI flex plate #529620 will solve my problems.

What size is the converter? 11" converters use a shorter bellhousing and a 12" converters use a deeper bellhousing.
Also a 11" converter drain plug is 1/2 way between mounting studs and the 12" converter drain plug is next to one mounting stud.
Junkyardjeff is also right with the late model C5 bellhousing being even deeper.

I used TCI-529610 because I needed the earlier 157 tooth flex plate. The TCI-529620 would be correct if you need the larger 164 tooth flex plate in the larger bell.
