Hot Rods Interesting License Plates

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 37slantback, Jul 17, 2019.

  1. A recently purchased a truck and recently purchased plates for it. I thought they would stop THE question, but NOPE!
I'm keeping one eye open for something old and "interesting" but for now, this is it.

MANY years ago car that was following me had a personalized license plate that caught my eye in the rear view mirror. Looking at the plate it was 3M TA3 I'll let you figure out what it read in my rearview. Apparently the person who scanned applications for plates to make sure they weren't in poor taste, etc. was off work the day that plate was approved.

I knew a guy that had a bike with that on it. Nobody ever noticed because of it being a bike, but we all knew. You could see it in the shop window when he backed up to the curb and parked.

Nice shot, BLUSHU. Seems you and I are neighbours. (The city that smells like it sounds.)

    My photo, not my car...

1940 nebr plate on my 40 ford, number "40" on the left is the county #, each county has their own, number on right is the sequence #. I finished the car when I was 61. I have collected 1940 plates from all 48 states & Hawaii, Wash DC mounted in their location on a map P4260030.JPG 2016-10-12 03.22.32.jpg

Here's the 1950 NJ plate on back of my 32 Roadster. Bought the pair at a swap meet for $20. Johnny Helmuth showed me how to register them in NJ. Also here is another set of NJ plates I found. Mantuajohn

Please forgive the off topic car. Like the OP, I bought the plates, then later realized what it said. Gets a lot of attention (some bad). IMG_20171230_162203395.jpg

Some I bought from the Bob Klessig estate sale. Only Bob could get Wisconsin to issue a FAAT ROD plate, and actually run it, too!

1986, I was managing an 'Accu-tune' shop, the owner, 'Bob' was a new MidEast-American, very stylish gent, 40, drove a red 280ZX, 'distinctive' to some...
His Calif. license plates read '2BLD430'.
Bob was balding, so when I saw the plate and 'read it'...(we all do that, right?)
I asked him if they were custom plates. "No, Mike...Why?"
"Uh...'cuz they read, 'Too bald for 30'."
Bob read the plate, and displayed some displeasure...he jumped in the car, headed down to Alma St. DMV, and returned an hour later with new plates.
Bet the lady at the window was surprised...

So is this classified as a barn find? Just saying....

  19. I started collecting 1932 license plates but they just got too expensive so I registered the 1932 South Carolina (The Iodine State) plate and run it on my old beater. HRP

    Well; I don't have pix.

    But:

    I used to have ATCH.

I used to see a car in town whose plates read URABUS. Always wondered what it meant. Then one day he was behind me at a stop sign. In the mirror it said...

When Missouri first started issuing personalized plates in the early 70's I knew David Wayne Ingersol. Yep; he got DWI plates.

Love the part where the Merc kept "smashing-into-the-back" of the Porsche.
Prolly 9 months later a VW was born!

On my FLHTP ex Mt Prospect Illinois Police bike (really) I have the plate
WUZFUZ. It had cop brakes and cop tires on it when I bought it, long replaced now.

About 20 years ago around town there was a red Mercedes 2 seat convertible with a lady driving it. I can't remember what letters she left out to make the max allowed but it said WELL KEPT.

There is a house in Searcy Arkansas that is entirely shingled with 1932 plates. The governor got a (illegal) kickback from the number of plates made in 1932 so there were many many made and never used.It is still the most common plate to find in that state
