I use them a lot both for selling and buying.. They are fine by me....

 

Don't know how bad it is down under, but I avarage between 5 and 10 robos a day. Used to do what you do, but then realized they were mostly computer generated calls with recorded messages......and answering the phone just encourages them even more. I'm not gonna stop whatever I'm doing to go to the phone. If they actually leave a message, I'll hear it on the speaker. If no one leaves a message, then it wasn't important,....

 

I think the reason that the brokers are so aggressive is that there are not a lot of real buyers out there. Look at completed auctions for any E Bay category and you will not see much green indicating sold cars. Just look at the listings here at the HAMB... many of these are celebrating their birthdays...been posted for a year or more. If you have had a car listed anywhere for years then maybe saying no to offers is part of the seller's entertainment ? Plus there is what I call the HAMB effect. Everyone thinks they are fabrication gurus and can build it for less than your asking price. Which is usually wrong, and when it is not it is because you value your labor at zero. I also love "Just testing the waters " ads. Let me ask the most ridiculous price for my car and see if there are any swimmers stupid enough to pay.

 

I use market place a lot, buying and selling.
What I dislike is some one asking about the price and location when it is in the add.
When I tell them ,you never hear back.

When someone says, "Just testing the waters," I just move on to the next ad.

 

I've bought and sold lots of items on CL, not lately though. I'd list my email as contact and it weeds lots of idiots out. If you get an email 10 minutes after the ad is posted, there is a 99.9999999% chance it is a scammer of some sort.

 

This thread and its responses are hilarious.......I ran into just as many low ballers, con men, tire kickers, no shows and plain old idiots and thieves putting an ad in the paper or the local penny saver as you do today on craigslist.
Calling in the middle of the night, leaving messages on the machine that made no sense, dumb ass questions........etc.
Its the same old shit on a different form of media thats all, you want to buy and sell you gotta deal with it.....its just part of doing business.

 

I wasted a lot of time dealing with people on CL and Market place buying and selling OT vehicles. They message me wanting to look at the car asking all kinds of questions, we set up a time to look at it, they don't show up and when you try getting a hold of them all the sudden they aren't so chatty

 

pretty good for buying, terrible for selling. I call it Flakeslist.

 

Always post lots of pictures and complete info on listing. State in ad no price negotiation except in person. Be prepared for a bit of BS, dealing with the public is never a cake walk. Sold a bunch of stuff and vehicles on both CL and Marketplace.Be smart and be careful and you’ll be okay.

Dealers are my pet peeve. I never run an ad other then on the HAMB that does not say "NO Dealers!!!" them they contact me try to low ball me and they always turn out to be a dealer.

My other under my skin people is those that contact me and try to school me on what I got. Give me a break I been playing this a long time and I don't need your input, especially when its the wrong input.

 

Have a car for sale up here on kijiji. Guy calls and is interested but wants more pics. I clean up the car inside and out and send more pics. Never hear back, but now my parking lights stay on because I was in a hurry with the sponge when cleaning interior. D'oh. Still have the damn car...

I keep a list of who calls and never shows.
At the auction last weekend I was talking to a guy who was interested in some car parts I have. Asking a lot of questions then told me about a guy who had what he wanted but was too far away so he blew off going. I realized I was the guy he had been talking to so I gave him a fake address to go to.
Hope he enjoyed the wasted time.

 

Why not try selling it on the HAMB classifieds ?
Then it will go to someone interested in like cars.

I sold my ‘02 Ram on CL back in 2010, the first person to call asked for larger pictures so I emailed a half dozen hi res pics. He called back, asked a few questions and made arrangements to be there the next day after dinner. He took it for a short test drive and we made the deal, it seemed too easy. For a week afterward I got calls and low ball offers on the truck even though it was sold. WTF? Since then I have a retired buddy sell stuff on CL for me and we split the profits. Ben is a wheeler dealer, and a brutal one at that...

 

The game is the same regardless of venue. If I get a female on the other end offering to broker my stuff I ask if shes wearing underwear today. They always hang up so it's a win.

Lot of women must want big block chevy engines on craigslist. Used to always see ads from guys wanting a BBC for their wives. It was usually going to be her first one too.

 

I have used c list to good result. I only accept e mail responses and only to a c list specific e mail account. I accept cash or us post office money orders. With the mail money orders if something goes south after the sale l can report problems to the PO fraud department. Also have had good luck shipping stuff through the Fastenal store to store shipping. The buyer makes the arraingments and pays the freight at whatever store is convenient to him. When I get to POMO and the Fastenal confirmation and tracking the item gets wrapped and taken to the store near me.

 

The last time (and I do mean LAST TIME!!) I listed on C/L was an ot S-10. Had a bunch of calls, a million dumbassed questions, scores of low-ballers and on and on. Finally I get a call from a girl with a heavy Hispanic accent that said they want to buy my truck. No questions, just ask if cash was OK (duh) and address. Said they would be here in 2 hours. I kind of blew it off as bullshit. Sure enough in a little less than 2 hours this old mini van pulled in. The people started piling out of it like a clown car, must have been at least 15 of them. They were all over that old S-10 like skunk piss. The girl that called was the only one that kind of spoke English. She said "Do it run?" I said yes. How many dollars? I said $1500.00 She had a huddle with the 5 or 6 adults and they all started handing her money. She came to me with a bunch of waded up bills. She said Enough? I straightened it all out and there was almost $1800.00. I said too much, she would not take the excess money back, said that OK, you take. I said here is the title, my neighbor is a notary. She just took it and said We fix it. Three adults and two little kids jumped in that little regular cab S-10 and away they went! I had to take a couple shots of "nerve medicine" when they left as they almost drove me nuts with all the weird talking and so damn many of them, and then when she wouldn't take the extra $300 bucks I though she was crazy. From that day on I use Marketplace or the H.A.M.B. to sell my stuff.

 

I've also bought and sold plenty on Craigslist and Marketplace. I know that most of this has already been said, but if you want to make selling stuff on these sites the least annoying it can be, bellow are the keys I've used. These 4 things have helped weed out a lot of BS. You'll still deal with stupid, but this cleans it up a bit.
1.) Lots of QUALITY, well lit pictures of the good and the bad.
2.) A lengthy honest description of the good and the bad. Err toward downplaying the item not overselling it.
3.) Starting ad with a disclaimer that I save on my computer:
Thank you so much for looking. If you are serious about potentially purchasing (item for sale), please read this entire add. I have provided many pictures of the good and the bad. If you need to see more of the (item for sale) we can schedule a time to meet. Price negotiations without meeting in person and/or asking if I still have the (item for sale) will be ignored.
4.) I don't bring any potential buyers to my property immediately. I meet them at a nearby grocery store parking lot wit h the item for sale. If its a non-op vehicle or something really large that I'm selling, then I might meet them at the store and let them follow me back. If it is easily loaded/unloaded in my truck/trailer we never need to go to my house.....May seem a bit overly cautious, but I'll take that over inviting robbery/thievery.

 

Thank God somebody is irritating. This place is getting too damn tame!

 

It seems the world has changed IMO with selling a hobby car and the market has changed some, not for the better. I've never had a problem selling a hobby car in years past but I have had my Mercury for sale 2 years now and people can be damn annoying today. This is something I've talked with other guys about and most agree, what happened to respect, common courtesy, etc., you can make an offer/deal without being an A$$hole. Total waste of time (90 days)and HUGE amount of BS involved, I tried Gateway Classics as a selling agent and my experience was bad, I would not recommend them to use as a seller, I can't comment on them as a buyer, never bought a car from them. I was at IOLA, several guys said car was a deal, should sell quick, spent a lot of time with one, drove car, brought wife over, she liked it, we were close on price, it is negotiable He SAID coming with cash on Saturday to buy as he wanted to take it to Salina. No call, No show, pretty F'n rude. This will be my last old car as I've aged out, garage fun/hobby has become work and I've never had much tolerance for BS all my life, my BS tank is full, heard it all, topped off years ago. I put in all my ads, No Trades, No help needed with selling, NO Text, NO Email, No overseas sale, Call, Cash in Hand or Bank wire transfer only. This has seemed to help some, Still get the texts, emails, I do not reply, hang up on the BS calls. IMO it's all BS if you can't call. I would like to add to my list, IF You have to ask your Wife, your Banker or your Mommy, don't bother me and waste my time. Thanks for letting me VENT today as I'm guessing I'm going to own/drive Merc for a long time, will finish up A/C and maybe paint paint flames or scallops on it.

 

I don't know you or your Mercury but you seem like a nice guy and the Mercury is really nice, too.

I also don't know how much money you have in your Mercury (nor is it any of my business) but, it appears, that the market has spoken. Aside from the regular pains in the ass no one has come up with the cash. Being some nosy here but have there been any near offers?

If you are solid on your asking price it may take a while to move your car. Two years tells me that the market perceives the ol' Merc to be priced too high. A lot of folks think the market is soft and that may be and if that is so that is not helping you out.

We all know that the Mercury would sell for $15, 000 in seconds and, apparently, your asking price is too high. The car will sell somewhere in between. I guess it all depends on how badly you want to sell. Best of luck to you, sir!

 

I have the car for sale, NOT a fire/desperation sale and for 15K you can't buy much of a car these days IMO, All it takes is one guy that has a similar vision to mine and can appreciate the car for what it is, what's been done and turn it into his vision. I have time on my side and my point with my rant was/is the attitude of people today especially the car broker/flipper type, the "Expert" always a Low Baller and Way Too Many BSer types. All of these cars are only worth what someone will pay on a given day AND my day and price will come as sure as I'm typing this response. My price is reasonable and negotiable IMO and that's the only opinion that matters. I enjoy the HAMB for what it is, a place to chat with fellow carnuts, the Pic's and History are outstanding, lately have spent some time/effort posting Pic's on threads I've been enjoying for years, a payback of sorts. I just sold a complete rear end (drum to drum) that was in my 56 Victoria. It was on Craigs List and here for about 2 weeks. Got the $100 I was asking and only had 1 BS call that came 10 minutes after the ad went up. My son has sold a lot of Circle Track stuff we no longer needed, he keeps only parts we can use. Maybe parts are easier...

 

I've used craigslist with good success, but I prefer advertising here, and give a discount amount in the ad for Alliance members. I also use instagram.


As for the craigslist bs;

- I never give out my home address. I meet at the corner store and have them follow me to where the item is.

- Even though I put in the ad that if it's still up, it's still for sale, and they ask, I'm still nice. They could be a potential buyer. This system has worked to make a sale.

- When they lowball me, I ask them to clarify which ad because I'm usually running multiple ads. I then thank them & say no.

- Robo calls are easy, I just hang up

- Solicitors, I interrupt them, ask for their company name and contact info, as well as ask to talk to their supervisor. I then let them know that I will be contacting the proper authorities to file a formal complaint because I am on the no solicitation contact list. This usually gets them to hang up and stop calling me.

- As for the asshats that call or text at unreasonable hours to let me know what an idiot I am for how much I'm asking or other similar subject matter... Well, I put their contact info on a number of hardcore S&M gay porn, and other associated websites.


So far the way I handle it all has netted me many a sale, and some entertainment too.

Over the years, the hamb has tought me how to spot the scammers. Most use the same bullshit lines again and again. Doesn't matter if I'm selling a car or a boat. Some of these scammers tell me that the Craigslist email doesn't work for them, and could I contact them via their email address. Really??? After you just replied to my posting by Craigslist email? I guess there are enough suckers that aren't educated on these scams, and that makes it profitable...
