Just steamed through the 20th annual Nationals held at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse. While largely a street rod event there were a number of Hamb friendly examples.
It was as hell on Friday when I was there! So hot that I didn't take any pictures. Lol Thanks Avater!
Re the El Camino: you are correct re Hamb connection but for whatever reason did not take a photo that noted same. Re heat: brutal there on Friday but a bit of a breeze and not too much sun made it manageable. Saturday was too tough and I quit around noon. Probably only saw 1/3 of the cars there and constant rain threat, imho, diminished the number of cars in attendance. Flea market was under active but vendors were still setting up around 11 on sat. Thank goodness for some of the inside exhibit offering a chance to cool off. All in all a good opportunity to see many cars and visit with vendors. Always great to see Gene Winfield. Thank you all for your kind words!
Would somebody, I say would somebody please explain to me how on gods green earth Gene Winfield do it. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Hard to say for sure. I’ve seen him 4-5 times over the past several years and if anything, he looks younger over time. Fun to talk with and and a pleasure to visit with. If you ask him what keeps him young he will share a theory with you.
Had a fantastic weekend at the Nationals! Thank you for posting the pics. Seen a lot of old friends have the honor of Gene Winfield signing the dash of my truck! I can not wait for next year. Thank you AVater for posting a pic of my truck much appreciated!
Thank you Hobo Jim. Met your friend and neighbor though at the time you were out and around. Nice touch getting the dash autographed on an already nice ride!
Great pictures AVater. 20 years of good times despite the heat this year. Those of us in the Western NY are used to Syracuse having some kind of weather event each year. Had a good time, stayed hydrated, met some great people and will be looking forward to doing it again next year. The changes to the fairgrounds are looking good. My biggest disappointment with NYS was the lack of American and Canadian flags visible around the fairgrounds. Walking around both Friday and Saturday morning we stop as the Canadian and American Anthems are sung and had a hard time finding flags flying overhead. At one point we spotted an empty flag pole.
Ray You mention "the changes to the fairgrounds are looking good"....WHAT????? Gov Como & former county exc Joanie Mahoney destroyed the fairgrounds with the destruction of the "Syracuse Mile"....one of the oldest dirt tracks in the country dating back to the early 1900s. Originally built for harness racing in 1826, the first auto race was run in 1903, making it the second oldest auto racing facility in United States history. Also removing a perfectly good covered steel grandstand with a capacity of 2000.....old restaurants (75 to 100 years old) at track side were destroyed. Now they sell food from trucks!!!!!..............Dirt Week is long gone. All the famous drivers of the last 100 years drove at Syracuse. The track had soul & oozed history. All this to make room for RV camping. The RV camping could have been built in the infield of the dirt track. Brain dead politicians that think they know better. They should be jailed. I'm a lifetime resident of Syracuse and have attended the State Fair for almost 70 years. I'm glad for my memories but sad future generations have been denied. History and ambience were stolen from us. We are left with a RV sites with hookups...and get this...there is no shortage of unused land. It's a disgrace
Show was hot and did limit participation but was still alot of fun. That is a pic of my 1930 Sedan in the Flea Market / Car Corral if anybody is interested.. lol
