    Engine turning is one of those projects that is very time consuming to get it done without any messups but when you are done it looks great. I have done a few dash inserts that were chromed and then using an abrasive stick the engine turn pattern was put in. I like using the mill for this operation that way once the part is clamped down it makes getting the spacing a little easier.
    On the Timbs special i cheated and ordered a sheet of engine turned aluminum from FPM metals in Nebraska from there i did the gauge layout and hammer formed the edges.

    FWIW . . . typically chrome plating is about four millionths of an inch thick, you actually look thru the chrome at the nickel. the chrome does add brilliance and a blue cast, but it`s main purpose is to keep the nickel from oxidizing. can you post an image of the piece that was done by Eamonn Keogh? thanx.

    I don't have a picture, but will try and get one-- There's a construction company in the next town over that has a 10 wheel dump truck with an aluminum dump body and the WHOLE THING is "turned" or whatever you want to call it. This guy has some beautiful trucks, but this one is over the top!

    Great thread; some real purty stuff!

    Obviously the owner of this one was a fan. As seen at the ACD Festival in 2015:

    I did this dash for my 32 five window using a abrasive round in my drill press. It's stainless and stays very fresh looking.

    Not mine- plucked from the HAMB cause I thought it looked cool and traditional, but different.

    Been doing this to some Hemi Heads lately, looks pretty cool! This is a set of solid Mastodon Heads for Ted Brine's Nitro Fuel Coupe.

    Glad you made this post! I had saved this thread for when I completed my dash. I forgot and it was done over a year ago. Well anyway

    Stainless, polished, alder dowels, Clover valve lapping compound, HF drill press, lots of work and it seems worth it once the sting of it all wore off.

    My first attempt using a drill press and a half-inch Cratex on 16 gauge stainless steel. I still have to cut a 3-3/8 inch hole in the middle for the tachometer, and drill small holes for the turn signals, high beam and start/run indicator, but you get the idea. I needed more dash surface than my 29AA provided, so I'm making an overhead panel the length of the front header, where I can also put a light switch, a radio and some speakers. Dang that stainless is tough to cut a hole through.

    Get a carbide tooth cutter from Lenox. Goes through stainless like butter.

    Dan;
    The '55 Stude speedster, '56 Golden Hawk, & other Hawks ->61 dash over lay was not a decal. Was a piece of AL, but it wasn't actually engine-turned, either. Real good eye-deceiving going on, as it used real small "divots" in the Al sheet to simulate the round circles from the "turning". At least the 3 Speedsters that I have are that way, as was the '56 GH dash. Still neat & eye-catching.

    Interesting. Can you post a picture?

    A quick search for images turns up some, but they look turned to me.

    Nice looking dashes. I’m intrigued by this “divot” thing. Next time I see a Stude, I’ll have to check it out more closely.

    What is the original purpose of engine turning? Is it just a finish or is there a reason behind it?.....just asking for a friend
