For my 31 Roadster project I will be keeping the original gauge panel. These cars originally came with a 1-1/2" amp meter on the right side that I want to replace with a temperature gauge. Normally, Google is my friend but not in this case. I cannot find a temperature gauge smaller than 2" even in the UK, I have a 2" gauge but it's too large and looks way out of place. Anyone have any experience with smaller gauges or have any ideas? Here is a pic of your typical A dash panel, not mine just a web pic but it is the same view I have. Mine has the same speedo, fuel level and switch.

  3. be cautious here. I see you are using the stock A gas tank. I used Stewart Warner mechanical gauges in the left and right holes. The stem off the back of the gauge would hit the tank. I ended up trimming the sleeve on the back of the gauge and bending the capillary tubes to get them to work.

    Thanks Jim,
yea I have seen the "new" look/style gauges but the look is all wrong. I have considered taking one apart to change the face to a more "vintage" look.

I retained the tank, but not using it for fuel, I will modify it for the deeper gauge. If I find the right gauge I will make it work.

You could buy the gauge Squirrel posted and take it apart, re-size and print a SW face off line that you like onto decal paper and stick it on there, reassemble and install. Sometimes off the rack just don't cut it.

  8. Maybe get a under the steering temp gauge for an A.

  10. Mechanical will cause some issues with the fitment.... Electrical will be a lil more forgiving on the back side of the gauge...... 2 1/16 will jive nicely. You'de just have to open things up a lil bit......
Not too difficult, and doesn't look out of place.

  12. Have you thought of using one of those Harley oil tank mechanical dipstick with gauge. They are about $20 you would have to bring it to a gauge shop and get a capillary tube put on it.

  13. I'd use a vintage SW 2" gauge and put a curved glass from a pocket watch in it.

I did look into those, Smith has really nice gauges, they offer small oil gauges but no water gauges.

I'm using a MotoMeter on both of my A's.
