History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

  1. I did not know that Roo. Information like that is my favorite thing about this thread. It's why I tolerate all the petty bullshit that appears here when someone gets all butt hurt and the thread goes sideways. There is a lot of priceless information through out this thread if people would just pay attention. Thanks for sharing your memories with us Roo.

I fixed it. I apologize for handling that the way I did , I just don't appreciate being called out on something so petty that I didn't even do in the first place .
I am a fan of this thread and have posted alot of pictures in the past, with my interest being mostly in the old front engine rails, hoping to some day run across some photos of one that I once had years ago.
This is all I have left of the car, lever for the 2-spd. Lenco trans air pump , also same one was used on the hand brake, the car had the levers and butterfly wheel with the teak wood grips on it , this was a spare.
The butts healed and I'm moving on. 1563314122450~2.jpeg

  4. Good! No hard feelings here. Not the first misunderstanding I've seen on the HAMB. And, yes, you have contributed some good photos here. Please continue.

I first ran it a year later, and the cypress tree along with those on the right hand side were still there...all gone now.

    From rudeStude's photo above.
    Hmm.
Read the paragraph, then look behind the left front tire, "under" the chassis...said aircraft carburetor..??
Wonder if they ran an air filter of some sort ?

Kelly Chadwick and maybe? Joe Smith before the car got Fenner and Tubbs lettering.
I would also guess this to be a match race since it's the same cars in different lanes.

I saw them too, the first thing that came to my mind was aircraft wheels.

I can see aircraft wheels there, but being raised in farm country shit spreader was just a knee jerk reaction I guess. LOL!

Thank you for the education about the wheels gentlemen, it is greatly appreciated. Aircraft wheels never really came to mind, although they probably should have. It makes perfect sense. Jedd

I've read that it was the magnesium wheels at Douglas Aircraft that Ted Halibrand had experienced that inspired him to design his own for racing.

"Please excuse my ignorance, I'm not trying to be a smart ass here, but what kind of wheels are on the back of the Howard Cam's Special? They look like they came off of a manure spreader."

Could be – the car kicked some serious shit out of opponents.

    Hey D,

Nice old historic photo of the Howard Cam Twin SBC FED. There are plenty of more recent photos, but they all show one thing that most people identify with in drag racing, twin Hilborn Injectors. Most people are amazed at the ingenuity that went into the twin SBC motors installed at an angle. So, they are so accustomed to seeing a 671 and twin port Hilborns. But, as your photo shows, they started with a big single Hilborn Injector. A single!!!

Last month in a discussion with Donny Johansen, I asked him about the single Hilborn Injection. He had seen the movie I took of the Twin Bear in the pits at Lions and racing against Lefty Mudersbach. He said that the diameter was a huge opening, but within a year, the size of the new twin injectors surpassed the diameter of the big single. So, the twin injector was more efficient. Thus, the popularity of the twin started on a lot of race cars.

These two cars were the ones that everyone stood up, in both sets of bleachers, to watch them race… despite the clear view of each racer from the stands. Luckily, everyone in the spectator's side stood up and I was a little taller than most.

[IMG] Even the early, Howard Cam, Studebaker Sedan was one of the early users of the single Hilborn Injector for racing.
