Looking for any history on this old girl..Ex-D/A 1934 Ford coupe came out of northwestern NJ..Supposedly owned/raced by the Injectors car club..Been sitting in a barn since the 60's..Was channeled..Looking for any leads/history etc.
I hate to say this, but looking at the whole thing, I have to believe that the only racing this thing did was of the "bench" variety. I raced a "D/Altered" in the early '60's and even back then we had to have a lot of safety equipment. Does the car have a roll bar? Signs of a scattershield being mounted? How about safety hubs? If it doesn't have any of this stuff, chances are the closest it got to being raced is somebody painted numbers on it. (We did that a lot back then; we also thought it was "cool" to use the year of the car as the racing number.) That being said, I'd sure like to find something like that, raced or not.
I second that. We ran a C/A in 69 and it was a chopped model A coupe on a chassis that was a hard tail and center steer and an injected 302 Chevy. A D/altered would have been a small cube overhead valve in a light car or a heavier car with a bigger motor. That looks like an old chopped street car with a number painted on it. I do see the firewall is hacked out so who knows what they had in it at one time. That red circle on the side of the cowl could be a hole that was patched after the center steering was removed. Could be the body was put back on a stock frame ?
Yes, southcross, the body was cut off original chassis..The chassis under it was from another stock 34 Ford. The car was being "restored" back to stock configuration for the last 40 years but it never got completed. ..Weren't you put in an altered class instead of a gas class if the body wasn't stock? This car was channeled so it would have been in raced as an altered even if it had no other modifications to the driveline.
Just to clarify things, when I raced in '61 and '62, "D/Altered" (in the NHRA at least) was flatheads and six cylinders.
Congrats @Fordgasser1 that's a creamer of a score and discovering the history will be just the icing on the cake...hopefully we will see it come together right here at Hamb Central...
I currently own this ex-d altered 48 austin..when it was originally built in the early 60's it was flathead powered.
Non stock body such as no fenders. Gassers would show up at the track and see their competition was pretty stiff so they would pull the front clip and run as an altered . Engine set back also made it an altered. Center steering was another . Our car was designed as an altered from the get go. It had a chopped top , 15% engine set back, center steering, fabricated chassis, and was a push start only car. The later inline and flathead cars were designated as E/Altered.
