THE HISTORY OF MY 5 WINDOW part 62
After 3 or 4 days at the nationals it was time to head for home. This was one of those memorable road trips ( both there and back ), especially as I had never been this far north before in the coupe.

'96 looked liked being a quiet year for me and my coupe, but of course we went to 'the salt'.

These shots were taken in Port Fairy in '97. I bought the 3W many years later from a friend ( Peter Winnen ). Who would of thought that around 17 years later those 2two coupes would live in the same garage together. Of course there is a lot more to that story, but I won't go into it here.

The meeting at Lake Gairdner in '97 was cancelled due to unsuitable conditions for racing at the lake.
So the big trip that year for the coupe was to Hawksbury near Sydney in the state of New South Wales, to attend the Street Rod Nationals.

I came across these shots whilst digging for images. I think it was sometime in '97 when I got the roadster.

THE HISTORY OF MY 5 WINDOW part 68
Up until this time I had never made any major changes to the coupe. This was to change, a year or so earlier I had bought a pair of rear 5 spoke American 5 spokes at Chirnside Park swap meet. At John's Rod and Custom picnic in '97 I had seen a '57 Ford with narrow polished 5 spokes on it. On closer inspection I could see that they were the 5 spokes that came as an option on 1973 XA Falcons here, although factory they came unpolished.
This got me to thinking, so I obtained a set of these 5 spokes. I removed the aluminium centers from the steel 7" rims of two of them. I had the center's polished and then fitted back into 5" rims. The only draw back is these are a 14" wheel, the ideal would be a 15'', but hey, I could live with this. For now.
The first shot is before I had the wheels modified and polished as I wanted to see what they would look like. Actually the rears hadn't been fully polished in that shot either. I also did do another set of fenders that hugged the tires closer.

I see in this first shot, the chassis for Garry's '34 Chev in front of the coupe. I was making a stainless fuel tank and exhaust system for him. When I finished this job, I made a stainless exhaust system for the coupe and replaced the headers with stock Windsor manifolds.

I keep finding random shots. The first two are at the Melbourne Hot Rod show in the Exhibition Buildings. The next one is at a show in Morwell at Kernot Hall that the Eastern Valley club ran.

I knew I had these shots, I just couldn't find them the other day. These were taken I think by Ute Barton at the '95 Southport nationals in Queensland. Her husband Alan sent them to me some time later. He suggested that maybe the owners of these 3 coupes may have been posing a bit. I say nothing.

So '98 had rolled around, 'the salt' was fast approaching. I think we were in the process of fitting the engine I had bought off George Peel to the race car. We knew we wouldn't have the race car ready and as it was Chris wouldn't be able to go. So Wayne and I went in the coupe with his little tear-drop luggage trailer in tow.

Because we weren't on a tight time schedule, that is; not having to get there and run the race car. We took the trip over a bit more easier than usual. We took the time as some of the shots in the last post show, to set up a few shots from out in the outback scrub of the coupe in motion in the outback. I really do like these image of the coupe out there ' amongst it'.

This year would be the first time the DLRA ( Dry Lake Racers Australia ) camp at the lake would be in use. There is a whole story about this camp, that I won't go into here.

It was a bit different being at the lake and not having a race car to run. But Wayne and I both had a great time. Wayne's tear-drop trailer was a great asset and allowed us to take a bit more gear than we may have otherwise done. As well as it taking a bit of weight out of the coupe.

More from hidden albums in dusty filing cabinets. A club run in the hills towards Korumburra, this was to a local cheese factory. We did some real interesting stuff as a club and ambassadors of hot rodding.

The road trip was a short one down to Geelong for the '99 Street Rod Nationals. I was actually a part of the organising committee and as well was running the model car display. Throw in doing a bit of pinstriping, I was pretty busy. So I only took a few images and only a couple featured the 5W. I hardly got to use the coupe, but quite a few other people did, including my nephew Brendon. So the seed was well and truly planted, little did he know that some 20 years later he would own and be rebuilding the coupe. it's funny how things work out.

Here's some more random shots. Firstly is in Rita and Tony's driveway in Port Fairy, with their very young daughter Kayla. Then there is Graeme's tudor and my coupe, with a Scottish couple we befriended at the '89 nationals.
Lastly is one taken at one of Eastern Valley's shows at Kernot hall in Morwell.

    Here's even more random shots.
The first in Garry's uncle's driveway in Pakenham, just around the corner from where the picnic used to be held. Next is in early 97 in my our garage, that's Garry's brother's '37 tudor beside the coupe.Next is Garry's Chev chassis in front of the coupe, I was doing a stainless exhaust and fuel tank for it. Last is a wayside stop on my way back from Perth in '90, somewhere near Mount Gambier.
