Thanks loudbang! That is another Dover Drag strip photo I have closeup photos of the car that day, will post them when I find them. The car is restored and won its class at the Hershey AACA meet 10-15 years ago. Bob
This picture was taken in Barstow, CA and shows some of the Santa Fe engines of the early 50's. The diesel shops in the background were the largest in the world at this time. Several of my pals from HS went to work there as apprentices, eventually working their way up the chain. These were good-paying, steady jobs, many made careers out of working in these yards.
Don’t know for sure but given the Ralph Nader “Unsafe at Any Speed” mania going on at that time about the Corvair it may have had something to do with testing of the Corvair rolling over which ended up being unfounded.
