Hot Rods If you could only pick three vehicles to have ....

I’ll go with what I’ve got.
#1 is a ‘69 Plymouth GTX, it’s black as night with a strong running 440, 727 with a 9” converter and 4.10 gears. The exhaust note is rowdy and sets off car alarms as I rumble by.

#2 is my ‘58 Apache with a mild mannered 454, it’s a nice cruiser that gets a lot of thumbs up from women and small children.

#3 is. daily driver 4x4 for the six months out of the year that driving one of my old cars isn’t practical.

 

The three that I have will do just fine!

In our long, but interesting history with hot rods, the cars fit the needs as we moved along in life. These days, with a question proposed to all, one has to make choices by digging back in our memory banks. We already have our paid off, forever cars and with limited space, three extra cars would make us move, which is an impossibility, these days in So Cal.

All of the cars have been on my list for quite some time after 1965. Other hot rods have interrupted the thought process and they all took a back seat at one time or other.

One: After 1965 to 1977, I drove a 65 red El Camino. It was one of the most reliable cars (125k worth), ever, with only a battery and water pump replacement necessary. A second 40 Sedan Delivery broke up the single car family for a while, too.

The nagging thing about that El Camino was security. We could not go anywhere with stuff in the back without having to put everything inside, when we stopped for lunch/dinner or even touring the cities we visited. But, as 20 somethings, we did not give it much thought at the time. It was a car that took us on fabulous road trips everywhere. Plus, it allowed us to sleep back there on a moment’s notice. The problem was even during the coastal summers, the nighttime mist covered everything, including us, in the back.

My camera equipment, the suitcases, the small ladder, all had to be covered when going through mist, rain or coastal fog. The leather cases did not like fog or moisture. That caused a problem. The suitcases were changed to aluminum Haliburton suitcases and that solved the moisture problem over those old material covered, antique suitcases. But, the leather camera bag took up space everywhere, INSIDE.

To solve this problem:

One: A 1965 Chevelle, 2 door, station wagon with 15 inch 5 spoke, original, American mags or slightly tinted 5 spoke wheels, to tone down the brightness of the chrome wheels. (and A/C )


Two: Living and hanging around coastal cities and enjoying surfing to the extreme, played havoc on our cars. Sure, we had the first 40 Ford Sedan Delivery from 1961 until 1965. But, afterwards, it was the El Camino again, with the no security for the longboard and mid-sized boards while left in the back bed area. It was definitely a security problem. So, thoughts had always gone to getting a station wagon, but at the time, station wagons were family cars and not hot rod/cruisers.

So, while driving the 40 Sedan Delivery, thoughts were always dreaming about a 1940 Woody Wagon. The blast in the brain was that the cost was so high that it was not worth the effort, but one can dream. The daily maintenance of the wood vs the weather in So Cal would not make it a daily driver.

To solve this problem:

...for weekend cruises and short beach hops…

Three: From our drag racing days with powerful motors, lightweight cars and cool looks, all settled the performance issue. Somehow, high performance acceleration at an instant was always playing with our minds. Memories of stepping on the Moon Pedal and instantly being thrown back into our seats, was a thrill to say the least.

So, the always prevalent choice of a fast accelerating car played games during all of those years since the powerful Willys 671 SBC hot rod/drag racer. The only one that came to mind with a USA factory power was the ORIGINAL FORD FACTORY, 1965-67 Ford Cobra Roadster. Sure the Cobra Coupe would have been nice, too. But, we would settle for the 289-427 roadster any time.

Finally, the solution to this problem:
For the "need for speed" moments... Starting at 1965 and working up to the 1967 427, we are not picky...

The 65-67 Cobra is on my permanent Christmas list. These wishes have been on the permanent list since the mid 1965 era. I don’t think the list will ever be filled. Currently, we are happy with our household transportation solutions. But, we would need an additional three car garage somewhere in coastal So Cal if one or more, happens to show up at our doorstep. (We are not “leave the cars out in the driveway/street” people) So, those choices will not be happening anytime, soon.

FLASH:
The word from above is that if we ever move to the Rockies, or states nearby, it is definitely the Grey toned Ford Raptor with 450 hp and 353 rear wheel horsepower. Full 4x4 with all of the comfort extras. My wife goes for horsepower and traction. Since we will be out in the wild, if we move, she wants comfort, horsepower and traction in rain, snow and hot weather. Why a Raptor?

She was impressed with a Grey one that was following us for a couple of miles and it just looks cool. But, since she is reading modern western themed books like it is going out of style, (Longmire/Heartland/Hillerman, and others) , trucks would be our choice for the locations. (along with a 30 foot Airstream Trailer as part if the three car project parameters.) So, the 40 Woody with its fit and constant refinishing, would (wood) bite the dust in this last choice.

We like all kinds of cars, but they have to fit our current lifestyle and So Cal location. I doubt we are ever moving again. An old song comes to mind..."Dream along with me..." (Red is the theme, here... Don't we dream in colors? )

right now I have my 32 roadster, my 39 Deluxe coupe and my wife's 57 Chevy two door sedan in the garage

 

Would like a nice '53 Ford Coupe as that was my first car- like the current truck and Falcon-
But hard to think about forever- I'm always looking for that next one-

R S powered Stude G T Hawk, an A V8 2 door, and a toss up between a 66 Tri Power G T O, or a 64 Plymouth 383 4 speed Belvedere, or a 57 Olds J-2 ......just 3; really ?

 

I have a 50 chevy truck, would kill for a 33 or 34 ford tudor sedan, and sisnce the better half bleeds ford blue I
always liked the 57 ford sedan. The truck and tudor are or would be small block chevy as I am a chevy guy, but the 57
would be a hopped up y block, nothing else would sound right in it.

The Choice Was Made 56 Years Ago And Accomplished...

 

I guess I'll keep the three I have now....a 32 Ford 5 window...a 34 Ford pickup...and a 65 Corvette. But if I could I would rather the 5 window be an original 3 window.
