^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ If that second pic is "The Devil's Tower" it is certainly appropriately named. That's one sinister looking bump in the terrain. How tall does it stand above surrounding area?

my mom & her 3 cousins drove from Omaha to California in a 40 Ford sedan in August 1940. They spent the 1st night in Wyoming driving from 400am to 900pm. I traveled from Denver to Des Moines for the Good-Guys meet July 4th. I decided to re-create her trip in my 40 on the way home. I took the old Lincoln Hwy (now hwy 30) from Omaha to Wyoming avoiding modern comforts as much as I could, no a/c, AM radio when possible, learned a lot about cattle futures whatever they are, half-hourly updates of the Crawford County livestock market prices, way too much country music, no chain hotels or restaurants. I stopped to take as many old bldg pics as I could. I drove thru a horrible thunderstorm that later flooded Kearney, NE. I stopped at the Lazy K motel in Ogalalla, NE for the night. I saw the last Union Pacific steam locomotive, the Big Boy in Lodgepole, NE pop 200. starting back up after the train stop I had a real bad vibration. no tire shop or repair shop in town so I limped 18 miles to Sidney, NE at 25mph. I found a Chev dealer & they were great, got me right in & found a broken u-joint snap ring. a new u-joint, 1-1/2 hrs, $140 later I was on my way. pretty boring countryside after that. 1st pic is my mom in the frt window. 2018-03-19 22.30.53.jpg P7070153.JPG P7070154.JPG P7070159.JPG P7070164.JPG P7070166.JPG P7070174.JPG P7080184.JPG P7080194.JPG P7080196.JPG P7080205.JPG P7080263.JPG P7080266.JPG P7080297.JPG 3472833430_7476a161ec_b.jpg 66607548_2411224115605113_1202107805088088064_o.jpg maxresdefault.jpg

Next year head east on old Lincoln Way and come see my 40's in Marshalltown. They aren't really impressive, and we listen to country music here too, but at least we have cold drinks and AC.

My little bro lives right smack on old Lincoln Way, but he doesn't have any 40's (yet).

  20. Isn't that where Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens played their last show before perishing in a plane crash?

We were there on a Sunday and unfortunately 2 hours early for the 3 hour window it was open for.
This was the last venue Holly, Valens and Richardson played. The well known plane crash they were involved in was a short distance away(we didn’t ,but the sight can be visited) .
The Surf is still used for events as well as a museum.
Clear Lake is a neat little town, we’ll head back another time.

Was it not Waylon Jennings opted out for that flight
that fateful evening and relegated to ride the cold
tour bus for whatever reason? I may have read a
simple draw of the straws? I enjoyed many years of
Waylons music and still do. I also really liked the
Big Boppers Wedding song! I am sure these guys would have remained majors stars for many years.
    A sad day for sure.

Waylon was Holly’s base player, opted to bus because Big Bopper was under the weather.Valens got his seat winning a coin toss so it’s said.
