I recently bought a crank shaft at the local dirt track for a whopping 50$. Normally a SBC crank wouldn’t catch my attention but this one just seemed different can anyone tell me what all looks done to it ? Or what looks like was done to it. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Looks like it’s had some customization but without measurements it’s hard to say Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Yeah, cast crank, 3.48 stroke. That stroke was used in 350, 305 and 267 SBC. The question is, did the machining for the counterweights differ among those engines to account for different piston weights? Looks like welded area and grinding/ sanding is nothing more than a typical balance job. Other than that, to my eye it doesn’t appear the counterweights were turned down to reduce their diameter.
yea all done to balance it.. probably more than one time for different weight rods/pistons... probably cracked if they were selling it. I sure you will have to have it balanced again to use it and thats not worth doing to a unknown condition easy to find cast crank.
Same here...I see a used up cast crank with multiple balance holes drilled in it and an old balance hole welded up to put weight back....some light grinding with a 4" angle sander to finalize balance......nothing special and you likely paid about $45 too much. Been reground undersize on the journal but whomever did it was too lazy to even bother rechamfering the oil hole outlets on the rod journals Doesn't exactly speak to high quality work, for sure. If you think you're going to use it have it crack checked....
That would be a 267 for a 3.48" stroke; the 262 has a 3.1" stroke. Despite the 267-305-350, all having a 3.48" stroke, any of those cranks will bolt into any of those engines, they are just balanced slightly differently, but even at that, for a street engine, they could probably be used "as is". All are cast iron cranks, not even nodular. You could probably use it in a street engine and not notice any vibration. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Well damn thanks for all the good news fellas! Haha Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
