Projects United Pacific 5W Deuce Build

  1. It will "work", but it won't "giddy-up" like a hot rod should. And your OD will be practically useless below 95 on the highway. You want your cruising RPM to be at the low end of when the motor is making power so you can accelerate within the power band if necessary. Again, plug your numbers into the formula I posted earlier. I currently run the same .63 OD that you have, and I run either a 30.5 inch tall 700-16 or a 29.5 inch tall cheater slick with a 4.11 rear gear. I started out with a 3.50 gear but swapped it out for some much needed grunt.

MPH x Rear Gear Ratio x 336 / Tire Height x Overdrive = Cruise RPM

    65 x 3.50 x 336 / 30.5 x .63 = 1,578 RPM
    65 x 4.11 x 336 / 30.5 x .63 = 1,854 RPM
    65 x 3.50 x 336 / 29.5 x .63 = 1,632 RPM
    65 x 4.11 x 336 / 29.5 x .63 = 1,916 RPM

For comparison, here's your combo assuming a 750-16 (31 inch tall) rear tire:

    65 x 3.23 x 336 / 31 x .63 = 1,433 RPM
    95 x 3.23 x 336 / 31 x .63 = 2,095 RPM
    65 x 3.23 x 336 / 31 x 1.00 (no OD) = 2,275 RPM

I knew when I chose the gearing that it wouldn't have the punch. I admit I drive rather civilized and don't like driving hard. Don't even like spinning the tires.

Did the trans shop ask you what size your rear tires were when they said the combination would work?

  7. Glad to hear about your experiences, it seems the pursuit of a low RMP in 5th gear is often to the detriment of the driveability and performance of the engine. I hope the OP can find a suitable solution.

  10. My 32 has a tremec 3550. 3.50 gears and 29" tires. I run 68 mph most of the time at 1750 rpm. Under regular driving, I never have a problem. If I have to really pass someone, I'll put it in 4th. This is a 302 Ford and the truck weights 3300 lbs.

It was -2 in the sun. After painting I bring the parts inside immediately. Great thing about painting outside in the winter is less dust. I have a paint booth procured to do the frame.
