Hi fellas , ive searched and searched , beat the shelves at 4 local parts houses and i give. Ive got to ask for help. Model A Ford coupe project , came with a ford 9" all mounted up with bare backing plates mounted. Plates had a ford number which i cannot locate anywhere , one fella had some listed as 68 gt350 on ebay but i think he is wrong because those wheel cylinders are too big aswell. Housing pattern is torino / big ford new style . axle offset is 2.5 ... My problem is every single 9" ford wheel cylinder i have tried , the boss with the bleeder screw and line port is too big to fit through the backing plate. When i throw the calipers on every 9inch wheel cylinder i can find , it measures 1.48 ..... The hole in my backing plate measures 1 1/4" to maybe 1 5/16" or 1.3125 . Ive checked ford mustang , truck , torino , cougar , 60's through 70's and when i got to the 80 ltd then it got way goofy. Backing plate is a bendix , stamped ford number 3202351 . 10" brakes.
Please don’t take this wrong, but are you sure that it’s a 9 inch and not an 8 inch? Maybe check cylinders for an 8” rear end? Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Yes sir. It had me wondering . it has been cut down and i dont think backing plates are original because the numbers on the pig go to mid 70's truck. And yup Low Budget , it has been awhile. I do alot more reading than posting haja. Usually i can get this stuff sorted but this one has me chasing my tail.
So the backing plates could be off of just about anything, eh? I've seen Bendix backing plates on several other makes....but if it also has the Ford logo stamped on it, then it's probably from a Ford.
Have you looked at the early Fairlane wagon (10 x 2 1/2), early 80's Lincoln (10 x 2 1/2) Those Lincoln backing plates will fit the big Torino bearings, the 8" and small bearing 9" will not. Sent from my SM-G900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thanks Johnboy , ill check them out. If i cant find it im thinking of opening up the hole some and making it fit. Thw aggravation is growing haha.
Johnboy , i think you may be onto something . So i jut checked out an 82 Lincoln and came up with a wc101610 ... This is the first time that i have found one with a different stlyle " Register " .....Thats what im calling the area that contains the bleeder screw and line port ,.... Its the first one with a different looking register than ever other 9" i have tried , Compared to a standard wc37783

I went through similar with Oreilly cylinders on my 65 beater truck. The new wheel cylinders would not fit the backing plate on the front. They were too large. Since my originals were not bad, I put a kit in them. The new cylinders also fit some Dogdes maybe others as well. It seems the castings are off on these new replacements. This off shore stuff covers many models and in my opinion what that really means is, it fits........Nothing! Each year quality parts are dropped and or substituted. NAPA seems better in this regard for now. Try them, vintage parts suppliers and or other brands.
Hey found a wheel cylinder that fits..................... 1970 Chevelle....... I know , what an idiot right ? The register fits the hole in the backing plate and bolts line up. 7/8 bore and its within .20 length. Im trying them.

I made it all the way to courriee trucks which were way goofy . What led me to chevelle was , i tried one off of a 55-57 chevy axle i had and it was same size as all of the fords. Well a couple months ago my brother did a power brake swap on his 58 chevy and he was having a tough time with the stock big bore rear cylinders so he swapped in a set of smaller bore chevelle WC's and the register was actually smaller . so i went and grabbed a pair off the shelf at the part store and with a little light work with the die grinder and a little smoothing off the body of the wc on top and bottom they set right in.
One of the hazards and frustrations of following behind someone else who pieced the thing together to get a certain bolt pattern and maybe width.
Little material off the bottom to flatten it out for the step in the backing plate and a little off the top to clear the anchor pin plate. I for the life of me cannot find anything that would have used this big sealed bearing torino style end and backing plate with such a smal bodied WC. The big wc is the size of every ford wc i have measured or found and there is no way it was going to fit.
Too further add more info here, I just checked the backup plates I have here. The 75 Maverick ( 10x 1 3/4 ) shoes. The ones my car are 10 X 2 1/2 bendix ford #321992-L & R both have 1.48 register holes for wheel cylinders. Sent from my SM-G900V using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
My rear brakes were 10 x 2 1/2 .Came off a 428 Ranchero 1969. Also Boss 302 and 428 CJ Mustangs and Cougar's
Yes Sir. That is ALL i can find. These backing plates of mine are 1.30 hole. Nothing i tried fit until i went Chevelle haha.
In these situations I have found that is is easier to weld up/ modify the backing plate to fit a more common wheel cylinder.
