Rather uneventful though.swapped out a 283 for a 239 flathead in a cust roadster.cust provided the flathead and said the seller said it was a good original runner.fired it up today and all was good for 30 seconds then rod knock.oil pressure at 40 .stopped it checked oil.ran it for about a minute and a half thinking oil hadn't got all the way through yet and, Bam stop!got to break the news to the customer in a bit. 20190628_121740.jpg 15617520838707520955426389042115.jpg 20190626_114159.jpg 20190626_143104.jpg 20190628_121740.jpg 15617520838707520955426389042115.jpg

That's not good.... Maybe the seller should have stated: " Engine ran well until we pulled it cause of a knock" that would have been the full story

I wouldn’t have fired it up without the customer present. That sucks.

That flathead knew it couldn't follow a 283 Chev motor, so it just gave up.:p

The big, important questions is : Is the block OK? The rest of that stuff (in the pictures) is minor .m(You did say it was a 239). I have a bunch of rods and even a crank you can have for free if you want to come and pick them up.

The rod next to it got a little bent too but the crank still feels...ok.thinking I might toss a set of used rods and a piston in with a set of new bearings.at least that's what I'd do.gonna run it by the customer today but hopefully he doesn't come by.id hate to ruin his weekend.

A lot of motors get screwed together without ever checking the clearances. Most of the time it will be okay but sometimes not. Maybe that's what happened here?

Trying to see if the crank is standard or not.it has ford bearings that read T-77&A.and the piston measures about 3.1800

  20. Back when I did work for a customer. I never went and got the engines or transmissions rearends ect. If I went and got them and they weren't any good. I had to eat my labor. If the costomer does its on them to deal with the seller. Possibly a rod bolt Broke on your mill?

The 283 is from 1957 and is wore out and tired but ran perfect. perhaps there was voodoo involved.just measured the crank and bore and it's standard.gonna start looking for 2 used rods and a piston

I've got a complete air cleaner to pan "ran when pulled" 1950 Merc that has a 3 speed O/D trans as well as another later Merc (complete except for a distributor) also has a O/D trans, unknown condition in case you're looking for another engine or an 8ba short block with adjustable lifters. PM me if interested or if you want more info. Only a couple of hours away. I don't want stupid money for any of them, just need them gone so I can move forward with my '54 Ranch Wagon project.

I was talking with one of the local 'rodders' (LOL) about his flathead...Oh, he's built lots of 'em... still laughing) Guy says the 'secret' was in torquing the rods.
"I been 'angle-torquin' since before it was invented," he said. "Give them rods 50 ft. pounds, then angle 'em 'til you feel the nut seat..."
Looks like that knothead leaned on your customer's con rods...
    Gotta love the 'experts'...

That's a shame. Hope it all works out for you
