Photo from my front yard last night...seemed apropos. LOL We just live a couple of blocks from the city park so we get a pretty good show in celebration of the 4th!

I lost count how many times we completely stripped and painted the firewall and footboxes in preparation for this moment. Suffice to say I should own a good chunck of the 3M company by now. But we finally got it to stick (so far). At least we felt confident enough to move forward in the assembly.

A very nice fit on the driver's side. We popped the plugs in as well just to make sure we had no issues when it came time to do it for real.

    Resized_20190629_185156(1).jpeg
The passenger side was another story. After literally shoe horning this crazy unit in place and fighting to get it locked down to all the neccessary mounts, we found we still had a small clearance issue. I don't even want to talk about how that is possible. But the engine hoist had already been dissasembled (very optimistic of Dad I thought) so no way we are stepping back. It really only missed by a teeny tiny bit so I took out one of my body hammers and started to carefully flatten the rear header tube a bit. It is very hard to see but I actually flattned that area where the header is closest to the footbox. I litterally changed it shape by a 1/2 inch. When I slid the header back in place I actually had about 1/4" clearance. It is so clean and straight that if I hadn't told you, you would never notice, even up close.

The alternator went back on perfectly (well almost) but the good news, when extended as far as it can go out to tighten up a belt, it still has about an 1" clearance on the engine compartment's down tube and front sides sheet metal. The starter cleared, the steering column cleared, the oil filter had to be rotated but it is on and clears everthing in the area. The transmission clutch lines cleared as did the Radiator and the heavy duty puller fan cleared the rack and pinion unit by 3/4" (which on this car is a freaking 1/4 mile!)...LOL

The only thing that did not make the cut today was the expansion tank. No way does it clear the hood. But to be honest, I was not happy with it because that is not where it went on a small block Cobra anyway!

I hopped in this evening to make sure "I STILL CLEARED!" LOL ....and all seems to still fit nicely.

Our poor dash has been through it. As you can see it has had several edits the last one (you might remember) was when we moved the tach up to the dash.

    Resized_20190630_183301.jpeg
This afternoon I took my daughter to a local material store and they had quite the upholstry section. Before I knew it, I had my late afternoon planned.

    Resized_20190630_190137.jpeg
Of course the guage holes have been in place for a while but I still needed a hole marked and cut for the switch panel.

    Resized_20190630_190537.jpeg
After recently finishing the firewall and putting the dash in place it was obvious the space between them for the wiring harness is fairly limited. Originally I was not going cut the glove box door out. However it would be handy to use that area for the fuse box. So no time like the present, we went ahead and cut the hole out etc.

    Resized_20190630_193537.jpeg
I found this killer molding foam there as well and decided to pad the dash with it. We simply glued it to the dash and then cut out the holes.

    Resized_20190630_193529 copy.jpeg
It really worked well and gave the entire dash a nice clean rounded, soft lookl
    Resized_20190630_194045.jpeg
Just before it totally set up, we cut out the outline of the plate from our switches. This way it will pull itself down inside the padding.

    Resized_20190630_194132.jpeg
It fit perfectly so now all we have to do is apply the adheasive to the foam and vinyl material and then stretch it in place etc.

    Resized_20190630_200342.jpeg
It went on really well. No wrinkles or tunneling. I was very happy with it until I slid the guages in place for a test fit. It looked really nice except for the lower small guage. When I was trimming its hole out, I had cut the hole at an angle and it showed around the outside of the gauge rim.

At the same time, my daughter said it looked a bit plain anyway. So to fix both issues we created an over lay in sort of a "V" shape. This allowed us to cover up the mistake and give the dash some character.

    Resized_20190630_204839.jpeg
It looks really good sitting on the patio table, so good we simply had to take it to the shop and install it.

And for right now the guages are just sitting in there. I have to do some triming on the hold down pieces to make them fit. When ever they go on the gauges will be pulled down a bit into the foam and give it more of a padded look as well.

Thanks boys. I was a bit frustrated after finishing it the first round and having one gauge hole screw the entire thing up. But my daughter was right, it did need something so it didn't look so plain. AND I learned something from that first round: That second layer I only cut and "x" of each hole and shoved the gauges in (something I was going to do the first time but then second guessed myself when it came time to cut. Happy accidents I suppose!

Good timing on the header question DDD as that is our next little project. You know I learned a lot about high performance headers on the Austin. Some of you might remember the "white" ceramic coat debacle. Long story short I had them ceramic coated white and they looked like someone had spray painted them with watered down white paint of some kind. Found out white ceramic is very hard to get right. Then we had to have the next company blast all the coating off in order to just start again with a polished looking color. But that was not what I wanted. So I took them back and just painted them white with the high heat header paint. That all just melted off the first time we started. By the time I was satified the rings were seated, the paint was gone. We tried a couple of different brands of high heat header spray and got decent coverage but was never happy. Then we started actually driving the car with the fenders on it and it was an inferno in there. We had to do something so I finally tried wrapping them with the Titanium (and lava rock dusted) header wrap. It was like magic. It cut the heat down like crazy. SO. That is my plan. I like the look of the wrap (something about gives me an old school feel) and I know it really works!

Stumbled into a good deal today. Our local mom and pops performance parts store is going out of business. Sad. One of my good friend owns it. Anyway I was in there today and he is starting to clear stuff out. Snagged a red top Omni for the Cobra. Saved almost $60.00 over JEGS or Summit. Going to miss that place though).
