The first time I saw the Grand Canyon I was with my grandparents in a 1959 Imperial towing an Airstream trailer. We got out at an overlook...Grandad said "this is where the Scotsman lost his dime...let's go!".

  2. I'll bet that's about right if you kept if you kept it under 55 or 60 and maybe just one or two passengers. But much faster than that the aerodynamics, or lack thereof, have got be costing you. Plus all the luggage up there on that fancy "chrome mattress rack".

Oh yeah... you're dragging along an A/C compressor too, aren't you? 14 mpg sounds about right, when you also factor in the "smiles per gallon" your getting. :p

Glad to see everything is going good for you and the family. You have more stones than most guys to do that trip in a 66 year old Rambler. My wife and I did the deed in 04 in an OT Buick Century. We went 66 all we could and hit all the high spots clear to Oatman, then to Vegas, on to California and up the coast to the capital city then east to Reno, Salt Flats, Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore and back to Ohio. We only had two weeks as I had to get back to work so we missed a lot of stops I would have like to made. Now that I have retired I am going to talk the Mrs. into doing it again, but not so rushed this time.
Thanks for taking us along on your epic trip, may you have a safe and happy trip back to home base in PA!!

Both those ideas are great........I wonder if anyone makes slides any more? Nothing was better than showing your vacation slides to family and friends......and no I do not mean slideshow on a computer screen....lol....dark room, popcorn and slide carousel.

Did you ever ask your family and friends about that?

Where it was once rubber and tore... the guy welded a piece of steel in. Not a perfect fix... but in the middle of no where and for a hundred bucks in cash, I was not about to ask questions. Lol From what I read up on... it’s rubber Incase the motor mount breaks, it won’t push the linkage in. Kinda the chance I have to take for the quick fix. Plus I’m not banging gears with three on the tree. So I’m not thinking I’ll break a motor mount anytime soon. Famous last words, right?!

There's going to be a small amount of flex in the fitting but the ball inside the cross arm should allow for that. The original design was set up to fail eventually, otherwise there wouldn't be a spring holding the whole thing together. Not one of Rambler engineering's better ideas. What the mechanic did was a good temporary fix, it'll get you home. Heck, I've gotten myself home with rubber bands holding my throttle linkage together. Whatever works, right?

  12. Praying you have a safe and fun trip back. Hopefully it will be relaxed and you have plenty of time to enjoy the trip along the way.

  13. I just finished a start to finish read of your adventure, and am unbelievably jealous.

    A couple of observations:
•You have a great looking family! That youngest one looks like a hoot.
•How did you EVER get your wife to go along? She's a keeper!
•I wish that I had done something like this before I got old.
•Thanks for sharing your life-time adventure.

In the words of Steve Martin, "We're just a couple of wild and crazy guys".

My wife and kids travel a lot between our house in San Diego and the other in Kansas. We love it! I don't post here because my traveling vessels are off topic. If I can include and adventure with the on topic vehicle in tow and get away with it, I will.

  16. I couldn't have said it better, although we did travel a lot with out twin girls in the 40 Ford sedan pulling a mullins trailer ( 3 females need lots of stuff ) & my tools, ice chest & food was in the trunk but we never travel Route 66, that is something I wish we had done. HRP

Thank you sir... and yes, she’s my best friend and definitely a keeper. She puts up with my car addiction and most of my crazy ideas. As long as this car gets us home I’ll still have her trust! Lol

A3A82256-CFA7-4BBA-90E8-949F44FEAA4C.jpeg We left at 3:30 am so to get through The Mojave desert before the heat was to bad for the Rambler. We were able to stop and get some breakfast at what I believe is the only spot still open in this stretch of desert. Best breakfast we had on the entire trip so far. Cool old gas station right next-door to it. So far the ramblers doing good. I’m just keeping my eye out on the engine oil and small leak that has developed between the transmission and the torque tube. Seems to be good unless I park the car on a hill facing down. Guess we’ll see what happens? D79344F3-7246-4DD9-9BBE-A209F12344FF.jpeg 3044687D-0D34-44A4-8782-3AEEAB1EAB43.jpeg 580E454B-F3A2-411D-8B31-FBE5BD5D8608.jpeg

I just looked up that Ludlow Café on Google Earth. Looks like the old road (called National Trails Highway on GE) is right next to I-40. Are you using the old road?

I had to double take, I thought it was a service for converting slides to digital computer files, not the other way around.

No.. jumped on 40 to get out of the Desert. That was at the only exit with a single gas station.

I am looking at the picts with my grand son Angelo who is 6. He can't wait to go with me to California in our 69 el Camino. We are planning on going to the Moon Christmas party. Looks like every thing is family friendly out west. We live in Pittsburgh and are used to the clean living Pennsylvania/West Virginia has. I envision it being real crazy out west from what I read and hear on the news but it appears like its real family friendly and once again the media is fake..

Thank you so much for all this!!!

Ludlow Cafe is a must stop, had a great lunch there.A large part of our trip was enjoying the local cafes and non chain motels. Enjoy!
