Topped of the trans, rear, and greased the wheel bearings. Lastly, two coats of RainX on the windshield. Everything underneath, inside, outside, and on top look good. I have pretty good confidence that she might actually make it. Fingers Crossed!

Happy father's day! Have a great adventure, there's a lot of HAMBer's out there. So you should be good to go.

Enjoy the trip. It could take about two months of traveling if you stopped at every town along Route 66. A two week trip sounds like a ton of fun with the family. The kids will enjoy it.

Part of Route 66 runs through my town of Fontana, Ca. on Foothill Blvd. Biker clubs and car clubs travel through here on the weekends and talking with them, they enjoy the trip.

If you come this far, you might as well take it all the way into Santa Monica...Once you get there you'll be humming the song to Three's Company. Santa Monica is where their apartment was the opening scenes of them riding their bikes and walking the pier is the Santa Monica Pier.

Be sure to have extra water in your car for the drive through the desert areas. It can get pretty brutal if you're not used to it. Also, water for your radiator.

0E90F197-63D9-4311-AF07-74FC2080FD4B.jpeg Day 1... we got pretty close to the Illinois boarder with no problems. She cruises pretty good at 65-70. Doesn’t seem to like anything over 75. So far a lot of farm land... we start on 66 tomorrow. Looks like we are about a hour away. Hopefully this old girl keeps performing without any problems. Fingers crossed!

I was thinking about you today as I looked at photos from the trip we just got home from.
If you get a chance and your kids are at all intersted, there is a really cool dinosaur museum in Tucumcari that might make a great stop. several displays you can actually put hands on! It's not real big so doesn't take a lot of time to go through.

Are we there yet? Dad, Kathy is looking at me. Hey the blue seatbelt is mine, you use the white one! I hit her because I saw a slugbug!

(Sister’s name may vary, I used mine). Have a great trip!

Whatever happened to that family from Cali that took the family wagon to Fla and back a couple of years ago? I'm surprised he hasn't chimed in here.

Store this for when you get Arizona. I hope it’s lunchtime when you’re going thru Seligman. The Snow Cap is a great stop. They like to clown around and the food is great too!

I saw you were nearing the IL/Indiana border yesterday. If it's not already too late today, you might want to stop
at the "Dixie Truckers Home" right on the old rt.66 in Mclean,IL for breakfast. It's been right there since the twenties. I had some of the best blueberry pancakes I ever had there on my rt.66 trip to the LARS in 2005.
you can look out from the dinning room windows right at the old concrete pavement, real close to the building.

If you want to stop at Rolla,Mo tonight, a real nice motel there is the Drury Inn right on I44 / old rt.66 at the exit for rt.63 there is a Steak & Shake right next door. I stayed there in 2014. It was a real nice place.

  23. I am going to follow this thread closely as I am going to start the OT to pay for a trip just like this. Albeit from S.F. through AZ/NM/CO and back. But first I need to go through the power train on my Model A like a build a touring engine, rebuild the tranny and rear end and install an OD. Plus pay for the trip somehow.

    Good luck and have fun!!!!!

Super cool man! Any concern about pushing that old 6 with unleaded ethanol fuel? Valve seat recession an issue with those?

i know that engine well! what Frank says is true. the issue with headbolt torque is at base cooling system issues, hot/cold temperature excursions seems to be the root cause of the headbolt loosen nonsense. doesn't need Loctite, needs stable cooling (and a drilled hole in the thermostat).

63, 64 classics, and that damned wagon, are probably the best product AMC ever made. i drove a '63 550 for 21 years. brick shithouse, rode great, not fast, reliable as hell. i put a 232 in it but today you can make those 195.6 OHVs reliable.

looks like a great trip! what a clean car! that car is made for those kinda now "secondary" highways. yeah 65 mph is max, but what's the point of faster on a trip like that? you make me want to get out on the road in the morning....
