I have a 60 amp Chrysler alternator but with AC and electric fan, I'm going to need at least 80 amps. I like the look of the old Mopar alternator and would like to keep that look if possible. What are my options?
Rock, I believe the early front drove Mopars, say 84 or so with efi, had a 90 amp one that was like the old style Mopars. Had to be one before they went to the Jap alt. I think you have to change the pulley, but there is a puller that works well to remove the pulley, then you can use your old pulley on the new alt, pulleys are a press on. Before that mid 80s unit, the only old high amp alts were the huge 100 amp police car style. Gene Gene
Also, i think the alt that was on the 3.9 V6 that was in my 39 coupe was a high amp alt as well and looked like one of the old ones. Gene
Thanks, Gene. I see there is a 78 amp. I might get by with that. What do you think? http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx?A=RAL132029_0058739386&An=0&Ar=AND(P_RecType%3aA) BTW, Napa has the worst website ever! It was definitely not designed by anyone who knows crap about buying auto parts.
I went to www.rockauto.com and looked under a 1979 Dodge D300 with a big block. They list three big Amp altenators..they will fit big or small block mopar engines....I think sometime in the eighties they switch to the Nippendenso style altenator..Maybe around 1986.... Ac Delco # 3342214 100 Amp Bosch # AL528X 100 Amp Remy # 20036 114 Amp Hope this helps... I use a 78 amp from 77 Dodge truck in my 64 Valiant with a small block.....
I believe those are Bosch alternators, Doc. They don't look the same. I guess 78 amp is as good as you can do with the old design. I'll need to do some siphering and see if that is enough. Otherwise, I'll have to change to something more "modern" to power my niceties.
I have the Denso 120 amp with a low mount kit that Andy F. sells through Mancini Racing. And yes, the fuel filter was moved after the alternator was installed... http://chucker54.stores.yahoo.net/delialbrpk.html
How about some BLING Rockable...... http://www.google.com/products/cata...a=X&ei=PKgxT4ywMai2sQKuwqHrBg&ved=0CEIQ8wIwAQ#
http://store.alternatorparts.com/repair-kits-and-upgrade-kits-4.aspx You can just upgrade what you have too. Chrysler alternators are very easy to work on.
I think Big John's talking about upgrading your 60A to 80A with the upgrade kit part #HO-7004 on that website. Jack E/NJ
Or just bite the bullet like I did and get the 3-wire 110-amp 10si clone bling for half the price of the xler clone bling. Doesn't look too bad nestled in there with my 413. Besides, the 10si can be used as a 1-wire, 2-wire or 3-wire setup. http://www.dbelectrical.com/c-8468-110-amp.aspx Jack E/NJ
Buy an upgrade kit and upgrade your alternator to 80 amps. Then again... do you really need 80 amps???
the mopar cop cars had a100to 120 amp alt but they are HUGE and require specail brackets i have a alt off i believe it was an 86 daytona it looks like an old style chrysler alt and supposedly puts out 86amps
Just a quick question. Has anyone tried the 90 or 120 amp Chrysler Alternators from 87 to 89? They are not common but were used on the trucks with a 2 groove v pulley and are supposed to fit anywhere a squareback fit. I just ordered a 120 amp unit for My Travco Motorhome. I switched to electric fans 3 years ago and since then it eats alternators. I hope this fits the 440 well.
Ok since I did not receive an answer anywhere I ordered a Mopar 50/120 alternator for a Dodge 1 ton truck from between 87 and 89. The mounting points are the right distance apart and although the charging stud will be close to the head it will clear without mods. Just need to get the proper spacer so it is set in place. It does look different from the old round and square back and has an external fan but it is a Mopar part.
Well belt alignment is perfect with the factory spacers and it swings with no interference. The factory adjuster bracket is not long or curved enough. I have ordered a universal bracket for $15 that should work. New bolts are ordered as a spacer on one was seized to the bolt. I will update again as soon as it is up and running.
Powermaster Performance makes a few Chrysler Alternators. I run one of the their 100 amp one-wire chrome deals on my 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury with a Gen II Hemi for years. Not even a hiccup since. http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/catalog.html#
