I Recently purchased a 54 Chevy 210 with a 59 - 235 / standard. I wanted to switch to a dual carb set up with the offy dual carb intake. Any suggestions on what type carbs to run? This is no race car. I just want a smooth running engine. Thanks,
I read (here) to use 2 216 carbs on a 235 and 2 235 carbs on a 261. I have 2 Carter W-1's for my 235 and Dickster (who knows this kind of stuff) said they were a good choice. Hope someone else will chime in.
Rochester B carbs, like your '54 came with, aren't the best for multiple applications, mostly due to their vacuum operated power enrichment setup. Most dual intakes for 235s use the larger bolt pattern carbs (2 15/16 inches center to center), so using W-1s would require some modification to either the carbs or the manifold. McGurk intakes used the small bolt pattern carbs even on the 235/261 intakes.
What about the Carter YF? I talked to "The Carburetor Shop" and he suggested Carter W 1's..... for the small asking price of $695 a piece! I was hoping for something a little less expensive.
Carter W-1's are $10-20 a piece used, and carb kits are about $40. Make sure you get the right model of carb.
They were a stock replacement for Rochester B's in Chevys. I'm sure they came on a few other makes around 1950. Yes it's a Thickston. With a little port matching work, mine works great
I agree stromberg bxov-2. I run those on my flathead ford 6 . There hard to come by when you find them expect a high dollar price tag. i paid$85 for cores. There off of packards and studebakers early 40's
I researched this not too long ago and what I came up with has pretty much already been said. I did read on the http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/ that you want matching tag carbs (he has some great tec articles). Langdons sells some carb pairs, brand new and adjusted for a 235 for $180. Not as sexy as a pair of Strombergs but they get the job done. http://stoveboltengineco.com/catalog/store/
One of the main things you want when installing dual carbs are to be sure you get a matching set of carburetors. I just bought two Carter W-1 carbs from these guys on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CARTER-W-1-...=WDVW&rd=1&ih=006&category=33550&cmd=ViewItem I have not installed them yet so I can't inform you on if they are good or bad but I also talked to the guy at the carburetor shop and thought he was WAY to high on his prices. I still need to figure out the carburetor linkage but I plan on installing them this weekend.
