I have a ‘63 Canadian block 327 that I want to put in my ‘55. The passenger side front mount bosses are not drilled. I understand one goes into an oil galley and the other goes into the fuel pump cavity. Looking for tips and suggestions. Prefer to stay with front mounts if I can.
only the top one goes into oil, the bottom hole is blind. If you drill the top one to far, you'll hit the fuel pump pushrod. Or air, if you removed the pushrod, or haven't installed it yet.
The issue is that the fuel pump galley dumps into the crank case. remove the pump, stuff a rrag in the hole to the crank case and then have someone hold a shop vac on the back side while you are drilling. Then smear heavy grease or bees wax into the flutes on your tap before tapping. You will be fine.
I've heard about these bosses on some SBC's sometimes not being drilled/tapped. But, I've NEVER seen one for myself in all my travels, experiences, and wrecking yard-swap meet-cars for sale, fun times. What are those odds? I feel like I'm missing out somehow. Is it just me? Ive got a 71 350 from a truck that isn't drilled & tapped on the fuel pump side. the bosses are there just blank as Orphan Annies eyeballs!
Why drill it all the way through and into the fuel pump push rod bore? 3/4” depth and a blind hole tap will work. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You don’t need a thru bolt for that. They didn’t need it for the one in the photo. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I have 3 283 blocks like that, all from the mid 60's. its easy to do, I used a hurst front motor mount plate bolted down tight on the drivers side of the block and used to mark the holes to be drilled and tapped on the pass side. worked like a charm. the bottom hole actually goes through to an open cavity on the bottom of the block next to the oil pan. Did this to the 283 that is going into my 39 soon.
