Customs finishing off my 38 chevee project

hopping from pillar to post,i worked on the wipers today.and mounted the motor.i had to trim the cab a little to mount the motor just a little bit to mount it.the motor is held on with 2 screws.very fiddly to get the first screw in place so I tapped out the threads to M5 and locktited 2 studs in place used medium strength on the m5 studs shoud stay tight for a long time..on the right hand side I locktited in place and loctited a nut behind the plate.on the left I had more threads to play with so I just locktited the stud in place .when im finished I will use locknuts to keep it all in place.i will be running the wires from the switch up the A pillar through the 10mm oil hose

 

motor bolted in .header panel needs trimming too only 1 go at this .

spent today at the wipers.made up some templates and took a deep breath and cut it.theres another bit left in this before I have it where I want it

 

not much to show for today tried to loosen up the bolts on the bumpers but need more heat.sanded and painted the plate bracket.left it loose till the paint is fully dry.job for the morning

today replaced the distributor cap again .had a no spark situation when I tried to start the motor after the long lay up
purchased new cap ,coil and module.cap was a poor fit,contacted summit who replaced it .now trying to fire it up again.it fits better this time.running on 8 again

 

moving on to the steering column and underdash area.had to pull the column to slide a reducer up the column to fit the dimmer/indicator switch.had to remove the clamp for the column drop,and this had to go down the column to assemble in the correct order..anyway scratched the column but luckily its facing the floor..have to give it a shot paint.im keeping in mind I will add a bkt in the future for a column shifter.looks like it will all work out.ill reassemble it and paint it,then on to the jobs underdash getting it ready for the sparks to finish up the wiring.switch is an alloy unit high/low ,left /right ,and flasher and horn switch I will pin the adapter to stop it rotating.was going to glue it but I may need to remove it to complete the column shifter bracket

 

change is as good as a rest,bulkhead fitting arrived in the post so fitted that. locktited and lockwired.in the ideal world I need a new more flexible piece of hose.

 

today detailed the column replaced the worn out grommet ,made and fitted some gaskets around the floor mount sanded the column and bolts ready for some satin black.
then pulled the dash disconnected wiring and oil line.and made a jig to hold the dash while im working on it . and prevent it getting scratched needlessly.jig will work either way up.stuck some adhesive rubber strips to the jig.
had to clearance the glove box to get it to fit.repairing that is another evenings work.,first time offering it up.riveted the column clamp in place to stop it moving about and scratching the paint until its tightened.theres lots of wiring to do a drain to install from the cowl vent and mount and route the capilliary tube from the mechanical temp gauge (original gauge reconed)cant beat the original gauges for appearance plus they fit right first time.wont be connecting the amp meter will try for a volt gauge conversion at some stage and maybe a gps speedo if I win the lottery.ive a spare gauge I could send away to get overhauled when the time comes .

 

TODAYS PROGRESS.i turned the wires exiting the wiper motor through 180* and used eyelet connections instead of the spade connectors that came with the kit.wires now exit between the motor and mount over the top.well away from the linkage .should have came this way from NEWPORT WIPERS. IMHO

 

yellow and white are mixed up ,it could happen to the pope.easily fixed ill wrap it up next time around.

I am working on my new project. Basically I am trying to put 10 pounds of weight in a 5 pound sack. A great big engine in a little vehicle.

I could see a little of your tailgate in the one photo. I told a lot of my friends about your tailgate. They all had a big laugh. You would never get away with it here.

yellow /white wires switched over and motor bolted back in ,hopefully for good.

 

spent a few hours today making a bracket for the brake light switch.painted it ,fitted it and wired it the m5 screw were fiddly to get at.not too much room on the floor of the cab for lying down.switch is mk 11 ford escort.incorperated an adjustable stop into the bkt.quick blast of the heat gun and its finished.

 

sparks arrived for a few hours we went through the remaining wires out of the fusebox.anything we re not using was rolled up and put to the drivers side behind the dash.we talked over whats left so I can do what I can before he returns to finish off.need to drill a hole for a grommet so I can route the capilliary tube (temp gauge ) to the manifold.rigged up a temp dash to hold the switches in situ so they can easily be wired .rewired the original gauge lights.need 2 more bulbs its hard to keep track of all the small stuff

 

Your firewall already has a grommet for the temp gauge tube. Is the tube you now have too short?

 

too short Wayne ,I have to take the more direct route down the drivers side.luckily there was 3 of those grommets in the Painless wiring kit.need a 1 3/8 hole on the drivers side firewall.all original grommets were missing when I started the build

 

small progress today.collected a 1 3/8" holesaw,purchased some gauge bulbs and some stainless screws for the bed strips.made a simple jig to hold the column in the bench drill and drilled and tapped a 3mm screw in the adapter for the indicator switch.nearly ready to paint it now..i rewired the gauge bulb holders.originals had the insulation on the wires perished..im going to wire them again,if they were longer I could replace the bulbs easier.by disconnecting the fittings and lowering them below the dash.drill,holesaw and grommet are ready to go.tomorrow probably

 

redid the gauge lighting wires.happy with this bulb changes will be a doddle if they are needed.happy to piggy back the wires on the ammeter because it will be redundant.

 

made a stand to hold the column ..ill be able to rotate it spray it and keep the flex out of the way.

finally drilled the firewall for the capilliary tube grommet.from the engine side ,not where id ideally want to place it but from inside the cab its away from brake pedals throttle pedal and my feet..i will take a direct route out theres not too much to spare lengthwise..the grommet required a thicker firewall so I made a 1.5mm shim using 2 holesaws.grommet sits snug now.plan is to industrialize the shim using a few domed allen head screws and paintimg the shim and the screws satin black to help it blend in a bit.theres a bit left in finishing this off yet.its not like I can get another gauge and tube on Monday.

been kicking a few jobs around the last 2 weeks /finally getting to where I can do them ,have the materials /parts in stock and have given them lots of thought.ill be happy when I have the temp gauge up and running of course I need a partial drain down to finish it off.also need to wire up the dual horns behind the grille.!
