    Hello,

Over the 60 plus years of drawing flames and never becoming a painter, one has tons of admiration for those that have the skills to do a great flame paint job. I remember trying on our lawnmower, bicycles, Pee Chee notebooks, and even on plastic models back then. It was OK, but not the specific work of the guys that had the steady hand detailing.

Over the years, more experiments on slot cars, 1/25 scale models and even R/C cars came into play. The clear Lexan R/C car bodies made the flames look good with the reverse image being all shiny and neat. (all painted from underneath the clear body) But, tries on motorcycle fenders and gas tanks, as well as actual hot rods resulted in not so good examples.

With the recent So Cal June gloom, the early July, misty days/nights, we are now getting into the hot weather timeline...after all it is Summer.

So, when I see a sample on a hot rod that catches my eye, it is a wonderful experience. As far as flames are concerned, there is minimal, which is nice, all the way to over the top. Flames actually ruin the hot rod if done in the wrong colors or given too much coverage on the actual body and fenders.

This flamed red 34 Ford Sedan was nicely done and drew everyone walking by to stop and admire the detailed paint work on the flames. The topper was to have a blue pinstriping as the final edge to create the “real” blue flame as we see it in actual fire. But this one was very subtle and you had to get close enough to see the blue pinstriping.

Flames, if not done nicely can completely ruin a paint job. The wrong colors can also make a mess of a car. I do want to point out that flames, as seen on this car, are far better than the new style some are using which looks like "fire".
