Projects What about pipe nipples in brake system?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Jun 7, 2019.

  1. I’ve not seen it,,,
but SOB there’s a bunch of inverted flair to NPT, then NPT to inverted flair on this one we’re redoing. Sure would be less fittings, less flairs and a way cleaner install.

Just a few short nipples here and viola!

Just a reminder pressure is rated in Lbs . Per square Inch. That 3/16 x 1/8 NPT fitting actually does not have the amount of force or pressure on it that one may think is on it at any given time .

Not much else you can do when every unit, brake pressure switch, residual pressure valve and proportioning valve are all tapped for NPT. I'd say it is the manufacturers making cheaper units by omitting machining for IFF threads.

  6. Here where I live, pipe threads in a braking system are illegal. The funny thing about that is, you can still use a pipe thread pressure switch for brake lights. Go figure.

  8. The old hydraulic pressure brake light switch is 1/8" NPT, I believe.

A brake system will generate 1200 to 1600 psi many farm hydraulic systems use pipe in hydraulic system that see 2500 to 3000 psi.

With a nipple you could stack the RPV and bias adjuster right?
That saves two joints and save a few inches of space right?

With a nipple you could stack the pressure Switch Tee and the RPV as well
That's another two potential leaks and another Three inches.

That all sounds like it could be really good thing.

In that same area, It grinds me to see numerous fittings on the master cylinder to attach 3/16" or 1/4" lines. Get the fittings the factory uses, please. All it takes is a little time to find them. Jegs and Summit both carry them.

    Nipples ,,, we need nipples.

I suspect some sort of visual trauma from the past is the reasoning for such a dislike.

What is the P.S.I. rating of what you've looked into? Fitting are thicker than nipples.

The line from the proportioning valve with the red union and adapters. If that goes back to the MC, maybe replace the whole line and get rid of the red union and adapters.

  28. Are you being funny?
That union is kind of important
The red one is the 10 psi residual valve.
The blue “union” is the 2psi residual valve

Nope, I didn’t realize that. I was looking to simplify and get rid of the adapters and have less joints. Thanks for telling me that.
