"A small half mile section of thoroughfare through Long Beach that was called State Street in 1935 before it became the Pacific Coast Highway was graded and paved under a Federal grant of $60,500."

    Hello,

This old photo was taken looking west from the Traffic Circle area, up on the hill. It is near (several blocks away) the current Traffic Circle on PCH. It is located in the Circle Area, near the peak of the tall hill. It was a little unknown fact, even for a lifetime member of the Long Beach City (LBC) history. In all of our local history classes in junior high school, high school or the local colleges, it was never pointed out that it was called State Street for a short distance instead of PCH.

(January 1935 issue of California Highway and Public Works magazine is where it was noted.
Who reads these heavy duty information magazines, anyway?)

Our high school was only two miles West of this location down PCH. We must have cruised by this location on PCH a million times, with the Java Bowling Lanes nearby and the Traffic Circle and the Circle Drive-In looming down the steep hill. From this advantage point on top of this tall hill, a panoramic view East, South and West was available while cruising down PCH to Hody's and Belmont Shore. It was a great way to start the long drive down the coastline to our surf spots farther south in the OC, too.

    “Summertime and the living's easy…

All the people in the dance will agree,
That we're well qualified to represent the LBC…”

Historical research pays dividends, again… Despite what the Long Beach school teachers did not tell us back then, of a significant part of local lore.

Sad state we are in this unobtrusive tactic of marking a tire with chalk was found to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL by a court recently. A violation of the owners rights LOL. I mean 99% of the people never even realized it was done
