Any of you ever have a throttle return spring break or come off/loose under power? A very basic but vital piece of the engine but it could mean trouble if that should happen. I'm just not real happy with how I attached the front end on mine and wondered how others do it. The intake had a 1/32 hole drilled in it so I straightened the loop out some and pushed the straight end into the tiny hole and because its always under pressure it stays. But it could come out maybe I'd be in trouble.
I love this style bracket - throttle, return springs, cruise, kick down, etc.. You can un-B word it with some black powder coating.
I used an adjustable eye at the fixed end of my spring so I could adjust the tension. I wanted it very light, so the spring, like HRP above, is only slightly extended at slow idle. Phil
Be careful making the spring tension too tight. It can cause undue pressure on the throttle shaft and create wear on the base of the carb. Once that happens, then you have a vacuum leak and can never really get a good tune on it. I like that GM style double spring that HRP posted, they were tried and true on most every Quadrajet that left factories. If you need it longer it fab a longer bracket or fab an extension. Bobby
I'm not crazy about how this looks but it works OK for now. I was hoping to see how others have done it. This bolts to the A/C mount bosses on a C3BX intake.
I made a stainless steel bracket that attaches to the front Stromberg on my Y block tri power and have dual return springs.
Haven't finished my forward spring mount , I always use springs that pull in both directions. It keeps the throttle shaft from wearing out the carb and if one spring breaks it still gives you a backup. Had a throttle stick on me at Jax raceway one night after a 5.40 1/8 th mile pass and ended up on the front straightaway of the dirt track. Thank goodness they had the gate open. Or it would have been ugly.
I used a mid 70's Ford throttle cable that has a return spring built onto it. There is a similar return spring on the secondary throttle linkage.
Got my return springs on today. I made my brackets out of scrap from my metal barrel. I just like to make stuff rather than spend the money on store bought items that can be fabricated. 15 minutes worth of work saves $ 40 or 50 bucks that can go else where.
Now THAT's a heckuva throttle rod you got there. Can't see any other alternative though. I like it 6sally6
You are right. It is a vital piece. Install two. Two is one. One is none! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
31 Vicky, you are right . They have about 2.00 dollars in metal plus about the same for springs ,plus whatever the Chinese charge for chroming. Then add 9.00 for shipping and now Jeg's charges sales tax In Tn . that's 9.50 percent. Those prices will change if the tariff's stay in place. I used to buy a lot from Jeg's until they started charging sales tax on out of state sales. I buy almost everything from Summit. They have a warehouse south of Atlanta and I get my order in 1 or 2 days and no sales tax. I just make sure I spend at least a 100 bucks and get free shipping.
You have my attention, please elaborate. I'm assuming that you're saying they will give problems by backing out due to vibration. I've had the little set screw that aligns it square to the carb base back out, but I put a dab of the red Loctite on it and now it doesn't move. Pretty sure I put the red Loctite on the cable length hold-down set screw thingy also, but Ill check it when I address the other carb problems once my plastic spacer from Summit comes it.
There’s a bunch of things to improve on. The bracket bends, bicycle parts, aluminum cable slides, F that contraption! Great idea but piss poor execution. That’s why they sell a lot and present problems,,, a lot. I get to fix them ,,a lot
Here is the set up on my convertible. It’s a Lokar bracket, I couldn’t ask for it to work any better. I always use the double return spring set up too.
