Its tume to put a different motor and my new tremec tko 600 in my truck. When i drained the radiator it was black. I only put water in it. I see the oil or gas rainbow, but would this be head gasket or cracked block? No water in oil 20190604_171027.jpeg

After you magnaflux the parts, and examine the head gaskets, you'll know for sure. We can only guess.

Let us know what shows up, anyplace where oil can migrate, is good to know.

In the broad picture it doesn't matter where its coming from. I am pulling it because i am ready for the nee setup. It was still running good. Here is the new setup.

  11. my house is heated with a closed system water boiler. the water comes out black which is normal. I think it is from no fresh oxygen being introduced into the "rusting" of the boiler. maybe it is something like that?

tb33anda3rd, maybe its something like that but there is a rainbow in the water. I have tortured this motor for the last 17000 miles of its life, and it never complained. It has had the lifters floating just about every time I have driven it.

Beside taking it to a radiator shop, what would be a good way to clean the radiator out. It is a Walker.

If it were all still put together, you could run some cooling system flush through it a couple times, and see how it looks.

I figured as much. Oh well.

Might go talk to a radiator shop, see what they can do.

That looks like a fair amount of oil from manufacturing. I expect a good company like Walker flushes their radiators out before shipping.

Maybe a dumb question but was the water distilled? If not, could be from reaction to chlorine, sulfur, etc.

There's no problem that I see..

When red iron oxide is boiled in water, it turns black.

Oil and water do not mix. They repel each other. Massive amounts of oil will suspend in water but not truly mix. Other contamants and air get in there and what you get is a foamy substance that looks like a milkshake.

All I see is converted rust.

What does it smell like? A gasoline smell might mean combustion gasses but usually that problem blows water out of the system.

Since you are going with a new engine, the question is mute. Just flush the radiator out with a hose pipe.

It is a copper radiator. I did not use distilled water. Nothing milky in the water, and it doesn't smell like gas or oil, just a slight rainbow. It never used water, and never blew it out the exhaust. The reason I used water only is they don't like anti freeze at the drag track. Is there something I can put in the water on new motor so this don't happen again, and for lubrication of the water pump?

sure, Bar's Leak 1311 is such a product, there are others. Might be hard to find in stock at a local store these days...but try a "real" auto parts store

The distilled water will make everything last a little bit longer. You should definitely consider an additive to prevent rust inside your block

Another random possibility. Does the catch basin for the water pictured share double duty doing oil changes, etc? A little residue would explain the rainbow.

The catch pan was cleaned before I put anything in it. I hate to have dirty pans around shop so when done with one I clean it.
