Wondering if any of you have installed a small block chev with 200-4R into a 40 Ford and if so did it require an excessive amount of frame work. I already have a C4 in it now so have made prior frame changes for more clearance. Did your sbc fit without firewall modifications? I will use the smaller distributor. (not large HEI)

I have been told that the 200-4r is a little smaller in dimension than the 350 so maybe some of you 350 users could lend your advice.

I thank you in advance for your help.

A 350 turbo ( short tail shaft ) and 2004r are the same overall length and the trans mount is in the same place so it will "bolt in". The case is a little different , probably the 200 is taller near the back ( trans hump clearance ? ) . How much X member alteration has been done to clear your C4 ? The bottom lip of the X member will need to be trimmed only slightly to clear the 350 pan and allow you to change pan gasket filter. However there no way to pull the trans with the engine in place. No need to trim or modify the firewall . Later Bill

Are you sure the trans mount is in the same place?

I haven’t done it myself but I’ve seen 200R’s in ‘40s. I fit a Tremec TKO in my 40 which is dimensionally larger in every way. It took a bit of work but was well worth it. The SBC will fit in there like it was made for it.

I just fit my 330 Desoto Hemi and 518 OD automatic in my 41 ford truck. I had to do some x member mods but I fit it under and ahead of the firewall and floor, slight mod is needed to the trans tunnel cover. But that is for a PU, not a car if that helps at all. Not the same running gear but probably larger than what you are planning.

My thread is here with pictures of the frame mod and bolt in cross member.

Since posting this I spoke with a local transmission shop and was advised that the 200 is becoming more unavailable both in parts and good cases. The 700 more plentiful and less expensive to build. He offered me a 700 case to use as a mock-up for fitting. Thanks for your help now and future advices.

I had a 700R4 in my 40 that didn’t last and I replaced it with a 2004R. I like the 200 much better than the 700. 700 requires more mods to the frame than 200 but they are getting hard to find. I also have a 2004R in a 40sedan project that I modified a stock frame for and have a template I made for frame mods if you change your mind.

You are correct , the mount is further back on a 2004r the 200( non OD ) and 350 are the same. Later Bill

  12. The 200 will fit easier than the 700. I used a kit to expand the center cross-member of a 40, so that the owner could use a 700R4 behind the 400 SBC. I opened up the center of my 47 frame in anticipation of a 700R4, or AOD install in it. Currently has a C4, that transmission shop said parts supply is dwindling, but still works. The The pan on the 700R4 is not symmetrical; it is wider to the passenger side of car. Just some info.
