The makers of Plastigauge say it should be removed BUT, if left behind it will not do
any damage as it's oil soluble. Read the last paragraph here.

That's a surprise to me too.

I always thought it happened on something weak or wimpy, then it became a practice on everything. The covers at the drags were surely more for dirt than anything. We didn't call Detroit Dragway the "Dirty D" for nothing.

Allow me elaborate, he thought you just stuck in there and ran, with no need to look at the chart to see what the clearances were. My other friend's plastigage dissolved alright, along with a number of bearings.

Well this is an interesting tale! My belief is that if an engine is tuned to maximum performance as far as fuel mixture goes with long tube headers and the header falls off thereby drastically altering the " signal" the exhaust in effect " sends" to the carburetor you may well burn a valve or a piston under power but nothing is going to " warp" when it's shut off.

To prevent valves from warping with short pipes, the car must be parked on a piece of wood.

Nope...got it backward. You have to have a piece of chain attached to frame and touching the ground. ;););)
