To all my Pontiac friends, my 62’ Pontiac has been “in storage” so to speak for years and I need to get a vin verification to get the paper work started. Where are the numbers on a Pontiac frame? I did a not so quick search online and didn’t find anything. Any advice?? Thanks in advance Scott. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I believe they are stamped on a metal plate and attached to the left front door jam by the hinge with rivets.
I don’t know if these will help since they from a ‘68. You should have a data plate and a Vin plate as well as others have pointed out and poss a partial vin number on the drip rail for the trunk (good luck with that one. Regards, Randy Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I’ll clarify. Our DMV has a silly policy where they want two numbers when they do a vin verification = 1. the vin tag and 2. the frame number. This why I’m trying to locate the frame number. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Any idea about where so I don’t have to wire brush the whole top of the frame? For example tri5’s are typically right under the front seat area on the driver side. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
If the engine is original, it has the VIN stamped on the front of the block on the passenger side, next to the engine code. If they accept it that would be easier than trying to find one on the frame.
That would be a good start and a heck of a lot easier. I’ll break out my wire brush this afternoon Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I found the 140903 number but that doesn’t correlate with the vin tag. Am I close? I’m not seeing any other numbers on the front of the block. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
They didn’t start stamping the Vin into the blocks until 1968. That is a EUN (engine unit number) and won’t help with your Vin number. Randy Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
That would explain that. Thank you. I did however; learn that my car was made in South Gate CA and has 62’ heads. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I took the car down to AAA anyways but with no luck. Usually I get someone with common sense that is not interested in climbing under the car to look for numbers. The person helping me had no desire to climb under the car (I don’t blame them) but also had no intent of passing the car. So now I have to find another number. The cowl tag doesn’t tell me anything in regards to a vin and I haven’t found a corresponding engine number. So we are out looking for numbers on top of the frame near the trunk. CHP used to have, and most likely still does, an auto theft unit that had books from manufacturers that gave locations of ID numbers for all American cars and many foreign ones. A friend of mine who recently died was assigned to the unit. Maybe you can hook up with a Chippie who will help you out. I suggest you appear in person at the local office and begin your inquiry.
Mayve Pontiac Historical Service can hook you up. Sent from my SM-G965U using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I had my '54 VIN verified and they only wanted the VIN # off the VIN tag. Remember, if you ask 4 different DMV clerks the same question, you're gonna get 4 different answers! Our local CHP does VIN verifications every Tues and Thurs. I suggest you call/visit your local CHP office and ask them exactly what is required and then have them do the actual VIN verification.
That's the old policy. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/wcm/c...-16b2a21c-273f-49c3-bfa2-0e4e70a49fb4-mBaltDM
Do you have "supporting documents" that show some numbers? If you do not, a private, or DMV VIN verification won't do. The car will have to go to CHP. They will know where the numbers are.
Thank you. I haven’t checked them out yet but I will!! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Sadly I don’t. But in the past (like 3 months ago) the person at AAA didn’t want to climb under the car so the vin plate was good enough. I don’t mind going to CHP. From my experience The guys down there are actually really cool about it is just another appointment and having to tow the car which means I can’t do a whole lot to it until that happens. As of November of last year, vehicles without supporting documents MUST go to CHP. It might be a hassle, but make the appointment, and get it over with.
I should work out okay in the end. I think I was just grumpy the other day because it was over a hundred degrees and the person helping me seemed completely lost. I called chp and I am just waiting for a call back to schedule an appointment. I’ll probably have to call him back next week. Hopefully he is not too worried about the rear frame number that doesn’t exist. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I have a strong feeling, that if you ask them: Frankspontiacparts.com They will know where to look frame stamped vin.
I will definitely check out frankspontiacparts! Thank you Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Thank you very much! From everything I have read the 61/62 is on the drivers side but either way it gives me a very good idea of where to hunt for it. Much appreciated! Ps. If you get a chance I wouldn’t mind seeing pictures of your 60! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I have done several 55-62 GM vehicles and everyone has had the vin in that same location. Granted they were all Van Nuys plant. I did this car in 17 months finished in July 2016.
