Hot Rods Changed my 36 3 Window back to traditional

Way back in the 90's before I was educated by the HAMB, I built by 36 3W from the ground up with the help of my street rod buddies. Well, I finally decided to change it back to the traditional flavor after seeing all the cool 36 3 window coupes.

Here is what I built... drove the piss out of it looking like this. I gave it a 'temporary' paint job back then with John Deere blitz black.



After a few months in my shop I made some changes.

- Stock running boards
- Replaced the torque thrusters with steel wheels
- Replaced the rear glass fenders with Bob Drake re-pops
- Un-frenched the license plate
- Added stock bumpers
- Replaced the rear rolled pan with integrated tail lights with stock tail lights.

Painted it myself with ppg omni black base/clear I bought off Ebay for $200

Running a sbc and a 700R4 combo. I love the look way more now. I can't believe its the same car.

Excellent choice ditching the french'd plate. Nice alterations.

 

Reverting back to the traditional look was a good decision.

Way better now, did you have to totally strip off the Deere paint?

 

No, I just took my air board and a sanding block to take about half of it. When I built the car there was not a straight panel on it. The matte black didn't show any issues. When I sprayed the gloss I was very surprised how straight I got the car years ago. Its not perfect, but plenty good for a car I drive to Walmart

To be fair, the "old look" was none too shabby either, and Im pleased to see you fixed the droopy door handle when you did the upgrades.

This was my daily driver for years to work and elsewhere from May to November. Don't have a ton of money in it, I just drive the wheels off it. Change is good..... I can't change my wife, but I can my cars

You can change your wife as in get a new one but it’s a lot cheaper and easier to change your car

 

I'm not sure I'd have gone that far on a couple of things like changing the fenders and probably would have gone to a smaller mag wheel but with the same general look but it it is one great looking car now and was a great looking before.
I was looking at my Model A the other day thinking Steel or glass fenders and may get a few noses out of joint if I go glass but Wescott is just 160 miles from me and if one of their fenders gets busted you just go get another one.

Lots of work, but well worth it. Looks great. Those '36 3-windows look great in almost any configuration.

 

I like both versions. "New" version needs some chrome trim rings, too much black showing. Can't think of anything else I'd change.

 

When I built the car the wheels gave me issues. Because of the disc brakes I needed at least a 16 inch front wheel. To get the back space required, I had to go with a 17 inch wheel in the torque thrust II. I ended up with 18s on the back. I never liked the big wheels.

I'm a strong believer in Un-Streetrodding, a car! Never could understand why anybody would want to remove all the great things that make old cars so unique. Remove the chrome and stainless, add all kinds of digital bullshit! Then paint the whole car a color so it looks plastic! After I retire, I plan on buying as many Streetrods and return them to their old glory as I can, til I die. Love what you did. I think it looks much better.

 

.............When they lose the ambiance of their heritage it's far too easy for them to become "jelly beans".

 

I'm impressed! It takes a lot of courage to take a car back apart that is already "finished". I love the "new look". You did good.

 

You did done do good! There is a lot of street roddy cars that could use a makeover like this. Looks way Gooder.
