Not too bad for being banished to the forest for decades.

    I love a reunion.

Rickybop, I agree but it will definitely slow me down a bit in regards to mounting a gas tank. With that being said I have a few options.

I always thought that the washer fluid bottle was a cool idea!

I was able to get some of the tires to seat and hold air. The rusty driver side rear 15 inch wheel is part of a pair of 60’ Cadillac wheels that I pulled off a sedan sitting in a junkyard just outside puyallup Washington. They had a ton of old stuff out back. I bet it is long gone now.

The engine is pretty crusty and covered in evil black berry vines![IMG][IMG][IMG]

  8. IIRC, all the Poncho motors had issues with the timing chains. When Pontiac was developing their 4 cylinder (1/2 a 389), one part they had to upgrade was the timing chain, plus add a tensioner for them to survive the 4 banger harmonics. It wasn't the same parts as used on the V8, cost at the time twice as much...

Generally, the stock timing sets were good to between 80 and 100K, after that you were on borrowed time.

Gotta love an old Pontiac. Don’t focus on what’s wrong with it, but look at those lines! The tough part is just not going ahead and restoring it with an updated drivetrain. Because once you fix one part, then well, may as fix this part too, and on and on..... It’ll be a great project to do with your kids, so do it right.

  11. I can see the canister oil filter. Question the oil filter adapter is it a 90 degree version or is it angled?

Here is a pic of the oil filter. I would have thought it was a canister type for 62. Maybe someone converted it? [IMG]

That is a good question. I too would like to know the answer.

  14. Yours is a 90 degree adapter with the sender unit on the side. likely its the original. they also make a angled one that has the sender unit on the back. (gives more clearance for high perf exhaust ect. ) Ok we have been discussing the question over on the Pontiac Tech thread. It seems the answer is No. However there is evidence that all two freeze plug blocks are 389 or 421. a 428 is a three freeze plug block.

That would make sense angled adapter for clearance. I had heard about the freeze plug difference. I haven’t been on the Pontiac tech thread in awhile. Time to get back on there and start learning again.

Pontiac had a casting difference to quickly determine at a glance (in the assembly plant) if the engine was a 'standard displacement' (389 / 400) or 'non-standard'. There was what some call a 'mountain' but Pontiac called a 'transfer lug' at the rear of the block, at the area where the distributor mounts. It's the circled triangular piece- note the lifter galley has '55' stamped- this block is a 'non-standard' 455. The 389/400s don't have the transfer lug.

'Street' 421s are really uncommon in '62. List I have lists only 68 Grand Prixs built with the non-SD 421 in '62. I don't know if other models had them installed, likely but unknown. But the 421 Super Duty does have the same block casting number as the 389 in '62.

Maybe not rust but nothing left due to it having been stripped by someone.

  19. I believe Pontiac began using the angled oil filter adapter to clear the narrower frame in 64 and up tempests and firebirds with any V/8 motors... I put one on my 370 motor [.125" over 347] to clear exhaust. Much better than the old canister.

I’m a little bummed about the headers. As of right now we can only find the passenger side header. I’m not totally sure they would fit but it would be nice to find out. [IMG]
