This shot just keeps making laps. Last seen here in 2017 and as yet not identified but it looks to be a top gas car.

Usually the best idea when you are trying to beat the other guy to the finish line.

Mike Snively in the Hawaiian racing what (from the car number) appears to be Denver Schutz at Riverside's Hot Rod Magazine Championship event--possibly 1967 when Snively won the event.

  5. I'm guessing that the fuel system is probably the "giveaway" to this being a gas rather than a fuel car. But was the full face respirator type mask mandatory for the gas dragsters? Or did anything with a blower require a mask and fire suit?

So, apparently the storms didn't blow you away yesterday... :p

I did not "know" John but I had talked to him (and his wife) several times, when they were racing their 409 Chevys, at San Fernando. Also a couple of times when John was running the Black Beauty dragster, just chatting in the pits. I'm glad I was not at Ramona when he crashed. Back in the day, there was nothing to keep a racer from jumping into a dragster, provided he had the money to buy one. At the time, I thought that running a 12-second Stock car might not be enough "training" or seat time to make one become a dragster driver but I don't think that many folks ever considered things like that back then. I watched him run the dragster and maybe this is not political correct, but I never really felt comfortable watching John go down the track. I don't know why, it was just a funny feeling, like maybe he "over-drove" the car or pushed it too hard when it appeared to go south. It was just a feeling. I heard about the crash the next day after the crash, and it was very sad.

This is the first time I've taken a look at this thread. I figured it'd be made up mostly of
magazine photos and pro shots of some sort...I wasn't wrong. If I want to see the pro
shots I can go to my stacks of magazines. I enjoy seeing the home grown Instamatic
pics of basically unknown cars, like the two below. I wish when I was going to the strip
in '68-'69 when I was a teen I'd taken my little Instamatic with me. I've only got a handful
of shots, and a small handful at that. I was able to clean these two up a little and now I'll have
to go through more of the site. Keep the amateur pics coming.

Gil Hayward's Monkey Motion in its later iteration with hemi power. Not sure who is driving here as there were a number of shoes--Rob McKibben, Ray Higley, Maurey Hoover and Lyle Webster.

Looks like an over engineered death trap. Love it

  30. Nothing Dode Martin ever built was anywhere near a "death trap". The "Two Thing" was a masterful piece of engineering. The problem with it was that it was too heavy.
