Gentlemen, I stumbled across a craigslist add for a 318 poly. I noticed it had a rear sump oil pan. I would love to get ahold of one of these pans for my curent build. Anybody know what poly 318 cars of that era had this style pan? Or could it possibly a truck pan of some sort. I don't think it's a newer 318 pan, because the dipstick location is different?

The trucks up to and including 71, used front sump pans. Clearance for the straight axle. Both small and big block. I would imagine that is a 72 or later 318 pickup pan.

Hmm. that's interesting. I looked at a rear sump newer 318 pan and the tunnel (inside the pan), that guides the dip stick down to the sump is in the wrong position to catch the dipstick on a poly engine.

I was told (so I don't know for sure 0) that you can cut the pan all the way around down 3/4 of an inch and turn it around - then reweld if - making your own - don't know what you do with the oil pick up though - I don't think the pan on an la 318 will fir because of different size cranks - jaxx

318 and 360 pans are different because of the different size cranks, but the 318 cranks are all the same size, aren't they?

For the rear sump pan on my 318 Poly I used the sump from a 360 out of a motor home then cut and shut the section at the rear main with one from a 318 sump. Rear main caps vary between 318 and 360. You will need the extra long dipstick and I assume that I used the 360 oil pickup also. Dipstick tube on the engine remains the same and the sump has a guiding tube to get it back there.

I took a 360 out of a 1976 Dodge pickup and put it in a 1971 straight axle pickup and did not change the pan. Evidently they had the same sump position but I don't remember if it was front or rear.
