This photo of Marion Davies "Beach House" does not do it justice. Here is a better view:


The road in the foreground became PCH (Pacific Coast Highway). It was the largest home ever built on "the beach", between San Diego and Vancouver.


This is the ocean side view. Marion Davies was a legend in Hollywood, one of the highest paid actresses of her time. She also had a wealthy boyfriend, William Randolph Hearst. They both spent time at this "beach house" and Hearst's own little retreat up north, the Hearst Castle. Her parties created stories that are legend, if you were "somebody", you were invited (including JFK before he was President). The firsst time that George Bernard Shaw saw the interior of the place, he said, "This is what God would have built if he had the money".

She was known as a ballzy broad, that did not hold anything back. Here's a quote she gave to the press once when asked about her relationship with Hearst:

"God, I'd give everything I have to marry that silly old man. Not for the money and security—he's given me more than I'll ever need. Not because he's such cozy company, either. Most times, when he starts jawing, he bores me stiff. And certainly not because he's so wonderful behind the barn. Why, I could find a million better lays any Wednesday. No, you know what he gives me, sugar? He gives me the feeling I'm worth something to him. A whole lot of what we have, or don't have, I don't like. He's got a wife who'll never give him a divorce. She knows about me, but it's still understood that when she decides to go to the ranch for a week or a weekend, I've got to vamoose. And he snores, and he can be petty, and has sons about as old as me. But he's kind and he's good to me, and I'd never walk out on him."

I'd hate to think what's on the upholstery. That's got to smell foul for the duration of the road trip.
