Well first thought is a 1952 Pontiac delivery :D but I wonder if something from an early Falcon wagon might work. I guess you will have to search the web for used, repops or trial and error . Ebay , Google , old wrecking yard or CL.

    Hello,

From a previous owner of two 1940 Ford Sedan Deliveries,(a flathead powered and 327 SBC) why would you want to put on roof racks on a sedan delivery? The clean lines of the roof is what makes the sedan deliveries what they are. There are no drip rails to break up the roof vs. the smooth lines. If it is storage, well, the whole back area is open and empty, usually for your stuff. It certainly isn't for passengers, as we tried that route and did not work out for either of us teenagers. "just pile into the big space in the back..."

We used our sedan delivery for going to the beach, tried tying the surfboards on top and found out that the smooth lines of the sedan delivery make is nearly impossible. These days, the boards would fit inside, but back in 1960, they went through the removable rear door window. We tried all kinds of rooftop tie downs and they all failed on those heavy 1960s longboards.

Later on, when we had our 2nd 40 Ford Sedan Delivery, plywood, tools, photographic equipment and ladders of all kinds fit inside the big empty cavern. We even thought of putting in a 3rd bucket seat in the back for a new arrival to our family, but that did not work out.
upload_2019-5-16_3-40-35.png The second sedan delivery had a 327, auto, A/C, full upholstery and was a pleasure to drive, especially for my wife. It was not the bare bones sedan delivery of a teenage high school surfer/hot rod kid.

So, like all others, the question remains, why would you want to drill big holes in that smooth roof top? There are no drip rails for clamp on roof racks.

If you are planning on traveling for camping or such, wouldn’t a cool trailer be just as stylish and nice looking with room for more fun? It would be much more practical without destroying the smooth design of the sedan delivery.

You could probably build your own from stainless boat railing and fittings.

Just a thought or two... would you be looking for something purely decorative, decorative and also functional, or just functional? I like the 50-60's styles, but a commercial style actually meant to haul stuff might also be appropriate, eh? Or half way-ish, similar to the ones VW Beetles had. You could fab one like that easily, me thinks, and get it chromed. Gary

  8. There are lots of guys building the aluminum/ wood slat style that came on vw bugs and early rabbits
Try u-boob and see how it’s done

    • I have to go along with Jnaki on this one. Why stick crap up there just to be sticking crap up there?
    • Bolting on shiny doodads might be called customizing if you are a new member of the Harley Owner's Group making your weekly trip to the Harley shop for more lights and trinkets but leave that junk to the lowrider Bomba brigade when it comes to cars.

Are you talking just the roof rails, or a whole roof rack?
