Projects Leads on small journal main studs

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by model A hooligan, May 23, 2019.

  1. I was wondering if any of you fellas might know where to find this, my boss is working on a 64 327 Sbc we are having trouble finding the main studs for the windage tray for small journal. Seems all we can find is large journal. Small journal stud length is 5.2 while the large is 5.7 any recommendations?

Early Corvettes had windage trays on the 365 hp engines. I realize they are not studs but are bolts with extensions for the windage tray . hope that helps.

  4. They do not have extensions, they are a solid one piece bolt with a nut near the main cap

Yes they are on the 365hp,that’s what we are working on..

  8. The reason the can’t be ‘cut’ is first off they are rolled threads not cut from what I understand, if they was cut the part that is not threaded will bottom out to the block and not tighten correctly.

So like I mentioned,I’d like to know where to find the correct ones

  11. I THINK we tried those and they didn’t work correctly, I’ll have to dig into the parts box and look at what’s in there. Might be an option on those arp’s

  12. Heyyyyy that box looks familiar,I think we ordered those and they put the tray down too low, I’ll have to contact them and get some measurements. I’ll go look tomorrow in the boxes and see what we have

Won’t work, the 7/16-14 threads are rolled, the shank of the bolt is only .391 diameter.
Measurements from a small journal factory bolt are as follows- 5 1/4” OAL, 2 15/16” under the bolt head and the baffle stud is 2” long from the top of the bolt head. Large journal main caps are taller so the length under the bolt head is greater, the baffle stud might be longer too so even if you could shorten the bolt length the baffle and studs might interfere with the 365 horse oil pan.

One "Last Resort" idea if you are unable to find the correct bolts/studs : What about a thick spacer/washer( under the bolts that you currently have) to keep the windage tray at the necessary depth, & now be able to properly torque the bolts against the "shorter" main caps?
