Whats the best way to remove the crank pulley on a 239 Y Block. It appears to be pretty thin and a three jaw pulley remover looks like it will damage it.

  2. are they not the same as the newer Y blocks? I just use a puller that uses three bolts to pull with but that is on a 292.

No they are different, almost looks like its sheet metal, the latter ones are cast and much heavier.

  4. will the later ones interchange with the early stamped type?

I'm not sure yet, I've got one if they will.

  6. Never use anything but a puller that bolts to a harmonic balancer for removal. You will remove the inertia ring with a jaw puller. Make sure you remove the washer behind the bolt before connecting the puller. You may need a spacer for the end of the crank but it has to be smaller than the crank snout.

There is no way to bolt to this one, it's a stamped metal pulley.

  9. I did one a few weeks ago,
I used a tool that had two arms with "hooks" on the end that you placed inside the pulley and they hooked outward into the small slots in the pulley, then you attached them to a cross bar via bolts, then thread a large bolt down the center of the of the cross bar and tighten until the pulley slips off the crank. I did have to add a "spacer" (old socket) to the bottom of the center bolt to get it to pull all the way off. It was fiddley to assemble inside the pulley center but worked like a charm... sorry I didn't take any pictures of the tool.
FWIW the engine was out of a 56 T-bird.
here is another option... page 57, part TL7.

    Was your pulley cast?

Ended up putting a board behind the pulley and lightly prying out on it, it didn't take much and it popped right off. Now to swap out the timing cover and see how it fits in the 50 Shoebox.
