Crazy Steve, I would Google the manual for your specific multimeter. Check them out for illustrations applicable to cars, i.e. coils, etc.. They all function the same. Set your dial to the appropriate voltage level so you don't step on your peepee and screw it up but it should have a safety device in your meter to protect it. Measuring voltage is pretty straight forward. Resistance is checked by taking a component out of the circuit and taking a reading. This also is a continuity check. If you are checking current/amperes, you must put your meter inline with your circuit so the current will go through your meter. My $.02.

I was going to say I'm in....but it appears that the teacher isn't even in the class room, and they say that they aren't paid enough, well hell this teacher's apple is going to rot before or if they make it to class, some one must have some damn good smoke in the teacher's lounge.
    I'm out...

I enjoy looking at them in stores and swapmeets. Thinking I should buy one. But I can`t tell the differences between them. Kind of like comparing screwdrivers to cordless screwguns.

Crap..I wish the teacher would get here. I have a question on my meter, I thought I would check my battery while waiting...well the question is ...should there be flames coming out of the meter when checking the battery?
Mmmm..something ain't right...I did find out the smoke detectors are working, so I guess my meter worked.
Oh I'm staying checked in..just got to grab another meter.
Hope its battery is good. 20190516_035104.jpeg 20190516_035103.jpeg 20190516_035058.jpeg

Without an edit to the OP to add a link to jump to wherever the actual tech starts, yeah, we are at 4 pages of folks saying Yes in one day here (under 24 hours actually).

While we're waiting...about 95% of the time I was using my multi-meter it was just to read battery or system voltage. Then I bought about a dozen of these little volt meters, which are about a buck a piece online. A few are permanently mounted in vehicles, some have alligator clips and probes. Saves wear and tear on the multi-meter and doesn't need a battery.

  23. This is an excellent idea. The phrase I hear the most from car guys is that they don't understand electricity / electronics. I've been working with electronics for over 50 years and am very comfortable with all aspects of automotive electrical, including diagnosis and repair of computerized control systems. I'm also enough of of a realist to know if I pay enough attention to a thread like Crazy Steve is planning I just might learn something, so I'm in too. Thanks Steve.

  24. LOL. Yep, I have come to realize this old man that I have become is not as knowledgeable as the young man I once was THOUGHT.

    Carry on, Steve.

I’ve used meters for years, with success, but I bet I will learn something from the thread. Have problaly a half a dozen of them, Flukes and Greenlees and some cheapos. Just wish they would make a meter with a louder continuity buzzer! Thanks in advance Steve.

One thing I might point out is a meter needs to be calibrated. I was at a meet where they were having some electrical problems with the plug ins. They asked me to help... I grabbed my trusty Fluke meter and started checking voltage..... was getting readings in the 70 to 80 volt range. I told the guy that he had problems for sure! Called an electrician , he checked voltage.....125 volts . Put my meter on ....75 volts! I never dreamed a meter could be off that far! The odd thing was I had just used it earlier in the day on a 12 volt DC system , and it appeared to work fine.
