Hey fellas, So I’m a little confused and can not find a straight true answer. I’m looking for some 57 Caddi caps to run on my 51 Mercury however I’ve read the repops fall off pretty easy. What I thought was the original caps ( the ones on the right ) with smaller mounting tabs are the repops and all true gm caps had the larger mounting tabs like the cap on the left from What I was told. But when I read the info on here people say the caps on the right are real and the caps on the left are repops. What is the truth? Which are original? And which stay on the wheel the best? Thanks!
Here's what the OEM 57 Caddy wheel covers look like. They have the larger tabs as shown in Solo's photo. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Set-4-1957...:K30AAOSw3XZc1huj:sc:USPSPriority!33076!US!-1
Okay thanks guys! Next question, wouldn’t having more contact points be better when using choosing which ones to buy? The reason it’s a big deal to me is because I’m having custom center caps mad and I would hate to have one fly off on the freeway.
They will, a lot of the guys use them on their mercs. Just trying to find out which ones everyone uses.
I think most folks would use the OEM style if possible as they probably provide a tighter fit. However, I have 4 Caddy caps with the smaller tangs and will try them on my Merc. Bought them 15 years ago with brand new centers. The OEM 's are hard to find in good condition and not cheap.
Have them make a spare center cap when they are making yours. The teeth can be tweaked a tad to get a better grip on the wheel if the cap doesn't feel like it is tight enough. Someone with more practice can describe how to do it better than I can. Had a set on my 51 back in the 80's That I found one at a time over a couple of months. The Centers were trailer light lenses.
