Technical saving an old Navarro intake

Hey Guys,

I'm more kind of a silent reader, collecting ideas, asking silly questions and learning.
but now I got something that might be interesting for you so i wanna give a little bit back to the community
some time ago i bought an old dog bone intake here on the hamb. No bone on it just a cap.
being curious i wanted to look under it and then stuff fell apart. Badly helicoiled as it was it wasn't possible to screw it back together.
ok so let's fix that thing as they are no so often found. Bored out the helis, parts broke of,a mess bigger than expected
welded some aluminum into it and filed it down by hand, taking care of keeping it level to the carbs mounting surface cause if i find a bone i wanna use it.
this is when i took the first photo

cleaned up the inside and drilled it. Then tapping that baby

 

drilled out the rest of a helicoil from the cap.
Finally not that bad... Maybe will blast it and bolts need some patina

 

...and this is where its gonna go, replacing the actually mounted Navarro "super" dual,
paired with new Navarro heads on my French Flatty

 

Nice save! I'm not familiar with that intake. What is the "bone" of which you speak?

 

I think in this case it was a wishbone - as in he wishes he hadn't bought it.

 

kinda wish i had one , but they are available, its the heat spreader for the exhaust gases which bolts on top of it and goes even under the carbs. There are other threads with picshere on the hamb

Think I have the same intake - that was made into a three / two......but lucky to get the real deal as well... pics later...

 

Never saw one of those before. Glad you were able to save it, well worth the effort.

 

ok, got some more progress onmy favorite intake.
Someone, whysoever, cut up the gen-mount so i tried to rebuild it. Made some filler pieces, but they really welded up crappy

finally welded everything shut with welding rod. yes i know i´m not the greatest aluminum welder in the world. but hey i´m a hell of a grinder

and cut it down on the mill

yeah not really where i wanted it...

 

so lets put some more rods in that poor old thing


after the second "mill" i liked it a lot more

blasted it finally and it looked a lot better

found some interesting little holes in the carb bases. Don´t know what they are good for. Maybe somebody knows?

 

Nice work, I am surprise that you did not just buy an NOS one from Sears. Only joking, good job.

 

They look like prick punch marks, probably used to keep the gasket in place.

 

Wow! Really awesome work there! Love to see the talent on here- especially to save something that most would consider un-savable.
