i know a guy who has a dash, i think its a 47 merc dash

  4. The side trims are NOT identical... While the difference is subtle, mix the two and you'll quickly see the difference. Drake is selling '48 trim. If you have '47 trim and replace a few pieces from Drake you'll be unhappy when they don't match.

    47 48 trim compare 2.jpg 47 48 trim compare 1.jpg
'47 trim looked at end-on is teardrop shaped, '48 trim is V shaped. These are two passenger side cowl pieces, '47 on the left. This '48 piece has been 'repaired' so the peak on the V isn't quite as sharp as it's supposed to be but you can clearly see the difference from the end. The guy that sold me the '48 piece said it was the same as '47 too... nope.

Now, Ford confused things by selling left-over '46s as '47s, and then started using '48 style trim on the late '47 models as a running change so the '47 got a reputation as a bastard year. And some parts are the same; grill, turn, and taillight trims are the same between the '47-48.

OK new option, 1953 olds 303, my question is this....if i put a 4 barrel on it and a cam, would a factory banjo rear and torque tube and a 3 speed floor shift ttrans hold up to THAT engine? just looking for opinions. i can get a 303 olds ridiculously cheap, he has the matching olds 3 speed but he said in the 50s he would mate em to stock running gear

  8. Torqueeeee engine, you would have to go easy with that banjo. Either way, I would grab that 303 along with the tranny and accessories just for the future. The tranny gut can be put into a 37 buick tranny case for a killer combo that wont break easily.

can i rebuild the banjo in any type of period correct fashion to handle it?

  10. doubtful. It is all how you drive the car. Light 'em up and you will most likely break something.

  17. good find! get the drive shaft if he had it. the front yoke might be a valuable piece. Last one I grabbed years ago with F&J down in MA fit the 50 Olds standard tranny. They are rare and expensive.
My first rod back in '62 was a 47 coupe with a junk yard 50 303 hooked to a Lincoln 38-39 tranny. As kids we drove the pants off that thing and never blew up anything, which amazes me today.

36 tranny is not a synchronized unit. Seems like you are going backwards with the tranny choice. Just my two cents.

I agree with "rocket" you may want to rethink that tranny, lots of better choices.

tranny was pulled from a 32 that had a 38 flatty in it. also happened to have the throwout rod for my 47 with the pinched tab on the end coincidentally. itll work for me for now, paid 50 bucks for the motor and trans. selling the motor for 80 so i got paid 30 to have this tranny. im aiming my build date for 1952, thats the earliest my parts will allow

cracked open humpty today, top end is surprisingly nice, cam lobes look decent. pretty darn clean for an engine that hasnt been open since 1950! im gonna do rings, main bearings, gaskets, timing chain and water pump unless i find some nightmare in the bottom. paint her up nice and factory only upgrade being the 53 4 barrel intake and carb which could technically also be from 52 which is why im dating my build in a 1952 traditional theme. she will be a bit of a sleeper (or wouldve been in 52 at least) cut off gas fill neck lakes in the fenders and a nice quiet exhaust otherwise. i believe a 36 ford 3 speed with later guts cause it has synchros and a 47 throwout rod, skinny white wall bias plys up front and either slightly wider bias plys in back (what it currently has) or cheater slicks, skinny ones of course, black laqcuer paint. all trim and hood ornament installed, white tuck n roll interior 20190606_102541.jpg 20190606_104701.jpg 20190603_133742.jpg

Okay its moving again! towed it out to the shop. I am going to pull the body off then haul the frame back down to my house so i can work on it when i have a second. Just going to clean up and paint the frame. Then I will set the 303 olds and 3 speed so i have plenty of room to design and fabricate motor mounts. I will probably not do anything with the body except patch the floors as of now, get it running, driving and stopping then i can do body work as I go. I thought it was cool the implement arms on the tracor fit the front of the frame perfectly! 20200414_114042.jpg
