Curt....thanks for posting those photos! After looking at them carefully, it appears to me that a few of the laminated plates on the front of the damper have not been eliminated, but they have been reduced in diameter to fit inside the 'step' in the added front pulley. Very clever. Also, is encouraging as a 'guide' on how one might modify a stock single sheave pulley to dual sheave. Very interesting.

Hi guys, Just read this post with a fair bit of interest as i'm currently planning on building a supercharged 263 and have been pondering how to modify the crank pulley to drive the blower.. I'm probably going to have to use a decent 6 rib type belt to prevent slippage.. Have been trying to decide if I will try to ad an additional pulley to the front of the original damper somehow or does anybody know if an alternate balancer/dampener from another car could be adapted to fit the straight 8? Not sure how critical the design of the original unit is in regards to size weight etc..? considering harmonic vibrations of the super long crank.. I imagine there are some critical calculations involved and there are guys out there who specialise in rebuilding dampeners so maybe a good place to start asking for advice anyhow.. I did come across this picture (not mine) of a guy racing a straight 8 on the salt flats and it appears he's used a more modern balancer on his engine... anybody have any thoughts experience? I would also be interested to know how the 263 double pulley works on the 248 and if there are any ill effects.. considering the 263 is internally quite different to the 248.... would be an interesting experiment to determine how sensitive to any change in dampener these engines may or may not be..... I Also came across this interesting article about this bloke who had his packard straight 8 dampener rebuilt... Thanks.. and greetings from Australia... http://harmonicdamperrebuilds.blogspot.com/2015/05/vibration-in-my-38-packard-straight-8.html
