Technical Wheel wobble, can't figure this one out. SOLVED

Theres a thought, is your wheels tapered back enough to be hitting that bolt on weight looking thing in the pic?

 

I'd put a bead of something like plasticine or playdoh type stuff on the hub and tighten the wheels up and see where uniform coverage is or isn't.

 

I know your going to check it, but my money is on the drum balance weight. You might gain enough clearance by using flat head machine screws countersunk into the weight.

 

Looking thru the window of the wheel one can not discard the advise. If this turns out to be the issue there is 5 lug holes. Maybe clock wheel differently to see if it will miss the drum weight?

 

I'm betting the wheel is not clearing the ridge on the hub.

 

So here's what I found:
ID of the wheel is 3.125".
OD of the lip on the hub is ~3.25".

The wheel is clearly not seating all the way on the face of the hub but rather on the edge of that lip by about 1/16" all around. Torquing it down seems to seat it square but hardley secure on that little bit.

I don't know why I never noticed that lip. Just need to mount it on the lathe and turn that lip down a bit to clear the wheel.

BTW, the drum weight seems to clear the mounting surface by 1/4" so that doesn't appear to get in the way. Besides, there aren't any makings on the inside of the wheel after torqing down.

This is a good thread, for those of us that run Buick drums can learn from.
Thanks for all the input on possible solutions.

 

It is usually something simple that stumps us.

 

It's the little things that drive men crazy.

 

That may be your issue right there. You could check that real quick by taking a crayon to the weight and bolts and bolt the wheel on and then take it off and see if it leaves a mark on the wheel or just check the inside of he wheel for a mark where the bolt or weight scratched it.
If you remove the weight you will have to find someone to spin balance the wheels on the car or figure out the amount of weight you took off and put one on the inside of the wheel to compensate.
It's real iffy on getting those screws that hold the weights out without breaking the but a guy might get away with drilling the weights for counter sunk screws and get the clearance.
