I recently got these two pairs of wheels in a bunch of stuff I bought and I am curious what they are worth? The solid pair is marked Halibrand, and the 4-windowed pair is not (that I have seen) They all appear to be magnesium . The solid pair has a brand new set of old? Firestone dirt track tires mounted, and the windowed pair has some junk tires. 0508191539a.jpg 0508191539a.jpg 0508191542.jpg 0508191544.jpg 0508191539.jpg

  4. The 4 window wheels could be Palamides. The fore runner to American wheels.

I don't think they are Palamides but they are cool wheels. they look to be a 5 x5 bolt pattern. If they were 5 x 4.5 I would be asking how much.

Are the solids a 15x8 wheel? If they have a 5.5" BC and no cracks or gouges they should be worth north of $800 each. I personally think the 5.5" BC is worth more because they are rarer, and lots of old Ford guys will want those wheels.

I also think the 4 window wheel might be Palimedes but I'm not sure. Those are probably worth close to the Halibrands.

Ok, Just looked at them closely in the daylight, no curb rash or big damage, just lots of oxidization, and the solid Halibrands have several holes where someone screwed the wheel to the bead, but not the un-marked 4 windows.

    The solids are 15"x 8" with a 3" back space and both 5 on 5" and 5 on 5 1/2" bolt patern.

    The 4 windowed un-marked are 15"x 10"with a 4" back space and are 5 on 5 1/2" bolt patern.

I understand why they screwed the tires, just a shame they did that on magnesium. Call me wet behind the ears :D but do either set have a casting date ? Way back when (50's/60's) , were dual bolt patterns the norm if you wanted them ordered like that or a rarer option?

I don't think old Halibrands ever had a casting date on them. And the extra bolt pattern could have been drilled later.

The screw holes in the outer rim will reduce the value. Welding magnesium is hard to do.

So what do you guys feel is reasonable price to ask for either set ? I don't need absolute top dollar, but I do need to recoup some of the way-too-much I have been spending on hot rod parts lately !

Start at 15 for the unknown pair and 18 for the smoothies with those tires on them. You can always go down but it’s hard to go up.

Welding mag is not that difficult once you get it cleaned up properly. I have welded up plenty or rim screw holes and have even plugged and welded up extra bolts circle holes.

I've got a machinist friend who won't even redrill mag wheels for me. He doesn't want the shavings in his shop due to the fire hazard, he says. If anyone around is willing to do welding on magnesium, they should speak up. You are a rare fella.

Roo is correct, the welding is not that difficult once the material is clean. Car builder, Lonnie Gilbertson has narrowed, widened, and filled lot of holes in Halibrands, but it can get pricey ! Before I advertised those wheels, I would have them dismounted, so the buyer or seller won't have any surprises.

So, what would be a "sold within 2 weeks" price for them ? I need to recoup money, but I don't want to sit on them for a year to try for top dollar. $500-$600 per wheel ? Way off ? Help me out guys, first experience with real Magnesium wheels ! Your not going to offend me, I'm realistic !

I don't do ebay or paypal, My closest UPS or FedEx is 40 miles away, and shipping wheels always sucks. I think I might try Craigslist semi-locally at $1200 / pair or $2000 for all 4 ? If I don't get any interest then I can take the time to have them broken down and deal with shipping......?
