Yes. Flathead powered. Due to the way it was modified it didn't fit any of the SCTA coupe classes, And in those days the sports car classes were very loose. Nolan White ran a gas streamliner with head lighgts and such.

Jim Woods, I believe, ran a Ford 6, also drag raced it.

This machine may not fit this thread's timeline – but equipment-wise I don't think it will piss anyone off. This is from my first trip to the salt – 1972. My friend Phil Stevenson had a 55 Bel Air wagon his wife had driven into the ground. He put a 390" Cadillac in it, along with a pathetic Jet-Away Hydramatic and was racing it at El Mirage. He's drive it up there and take the mufflers off and run it. It ran 120s as I remember.

He decided to go to Bonneville and knew he had to step up to run the 150 he wanted. He bought a 6-pot manifold for $15 at a swap meet and I gave him 4 97s to put on it. Somewhere he picked up a pair of 4-1/2"x18 Halibrands (the ones now on my 28 Mercury) – one with a Bonneville tire, the other with an Indy tire – about 3/4" difference in diameter). The tires had cords showing thru, but were marked "Approved for 175 MPH".

Any who, he drove it up, put the Halibrands on, and the wagon ran a best of 149. He won the SCTA award for the top speed of a car driven there. That was before you could qualify that by driving from Wendover.

I was hooked. And still am.

  9. Although it doesn't fit within the threads original timeline of pre '36, (I'll more than let it slide) that is an epic story! Do you have any more pictures of it? Maybe with the Halibrands?

Nope – that's the only picture of the wagon I have. The Halibrands are still going strong. They've made a numerous trips to Bonneville over the years.

  12. This is directly from Pat Ganahl's web page. Check it out if you haven't already. He has an endless supply of photos and stories from over the years. These are from his column titled, "Dry Lakes Hot Rods"

Here’s a good photo I don’t think has ever been shown, and it introduces the Russetta chapter. There was no Russetta dry lake, and contrary to myth, even the SCTA allowed some coupes to run before the War. But post-War SCTA was roadsters only, so by ’49 or ’50 RTA was formed to allow closed cars, like Jim Woods’ wicked-chopped, Ford 6-powered, American Bantam coupe to run El Mirage. Note the V-windshield. I know you’ve never seen this rear shot of the car before. That rear window is beyond wicked, and note the single cut seam. Even though they wouldn’t let him run their meets, he’s proudly showing an SCTA Road Runners plaque on the back. Fellow club member Bill Burke next got this car, followed by Mickey Thompson, who put two engines in it.

Another good, but enigmatic photo from the Russetta file. You see Woods’ Bantam in the distance. I have no idea whose ’32 roadster that is with the tall hood louvers and chrome side pipes. And the chopped ’34 3-window is either one run by two brothers from Santa Barbara with a GMC six, that later became the So-Cal (more chopped) coupe. Or it isn’t. I used to know. But there are only so many brain cells left.

OK, I’ve had enough. How about you? But I couldn’t leave the Dry Lakes Hot Rods story without showing this scene (even if a few have seen it). To me, this is the picture of hot rodding, just transposed from the backyard to a dry lake. Two young guys in T-shirts and Levis with a stripped-down and hopped-up ’34 coupe they’ve driven up to El Mirage (note headlights and front license still in place). Looks to me like they’ve blown the trans (or clutch), but the top of the engine’s off, too. Who knows? But they’ve got it fearlessly torn apart and are hopefully fixing the problem. ‘Cuz I have a strong hunch they have to drive it home. For us, it’s hopefully been a fun trip through some forgotten, but not lost, photos. Ciao!

  13. Here's that same Bantam that Pat was referring to, when it was owned by Mickey Thompson and after he mounted two flatheads in it.

This '24 T (seen here in drag trim) was built by Jack Spencer and was in the nov. '58 issue of Rod Builder & Customizer.

  19. Thanks for sharing @Speed Gems! That's something I've wanted to see more of, Model T coupes in the history of LSR. Especially '26/'27 coupes.

  24. Thanks El Hueso, there is some great history depicted in those images.
